Director of EHS – AWP Safety

Overview The EHS Culture starts with you. As our Business Unit EHS Director, you set the tone for a growing and dynamic organization. Your role combines reducing risk, preventing injuries, monitoring environmental and safety compliance, and creating an EHS culture. You will work with EHS, Risk, Corporate, Business Unit, and other leadership to develop and administer the EHS strategy and operating rhythms. You are encouraged to be innovative and collaborative.
The Business Unit EHS Director provides leadership within the Central Business Unit locations and partners with AWP Safety Leaders to establish vision and strategy, advancing an EHS culture throughout these locations. You will support planning and implementing programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and incident-free work environment. The role provides technical and compliance expertise, supports day-to-day health and safety operations, and ensures proper reporting of injuries, health and safety concerns, environmental regulatory compliance, audits, safety matters, and motor vehicle incidents.
Key Responsibilities
Develop health and safety programs and standards at Enterprise and Business Unit levels; aim for year-over-year reductions in injuries, illnesses, incidents, and motor vehicle collisions.
Provide strategic vision, leadership, and operational execution of EHS performance aligned with AWP Safety expectations.
Lead safety programs including ergonomics, behavior-based safety, incident reduction, worksite analysis, hazard prevention, and employee engagement.
Support the development and implementation of EHS Directives and the EHS Management System.
Serve as an EHS subject matter expert and coach others within the business unit.
Research, evaluate, and recommend changes to improve EHS performance.
Support regulatory inquiries, enforcement proceedings, and litigation as needed.
Provide visibility on EHS progress to VP of Safety and Operational Leadership Teams.
Provide daily EHS support to Regional EHS Team and locations.
Ensure compliance with federal and state health and safety regulations and EHS SOPs and policies.
Establish and maintain effective EHS management systems, programs, and processes.
Educate and partner with business unit functions to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Set Health and Safety goals and assist in their implementation.
Establish, input, and report EHS metrics.
Maintain EHS records and required documentation as required by law.
Manage EHS job functions, including observations, risk assessments, training, incident analysis, and audits.
Conduct compliance reviews and risk assessments to support the EHS Management System.
Provide guidance on EHS programs to ensure a consistent approach across the organization.
Coach and mentor Regional EHS Managers within the EHS Management System.
Review incidents and motor vehicle collisions for investigation, analysis, reporting, and corrective actions.
Lead investigations and root cause analysis for severe incidents as needed.
Support development and delivery of relevant EHS training.
Work with employees and leadership to achieve cultural change.
Travel within the Business Unit as required.
Qualifications – Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety or related field
12+ years of experience in the EHS field
Certified Safety Professional (or certification) is a plus
5-8 years of leadership experience
5-8 years of multi-site responsibility
Experience developing and implementing an EHS Management System
Proficient in Microsoft Office and EHS management systems and reporting platforms
Key Information
Compensation: $155K - $180K base + Company Vehicle + 20% AIP Bonus
