The Operations Section of King County Solid Waste Division is seeking skilled and safety-conscious Truck Drivers to support essential waste management services across the County. We are hiring for one (1) career service position and thirteen (13) Term Limited Temporary (TLT) positions. The TLT positions are expected to last approximately six (6) months, with the possibility of extension.

About The Role: These positions will safely haul refuse material from transfer stations to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley and complete other related tasks.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Safely operate a variety of commercial vehicles, including trucks and trailers, water storage tanks and pumps, dump trucks with pony trailers, fuel tanker trucks, side dumps, and lowboy trailers.
  • Hook and unhook hydraulic hoses to specific trailers.
  • Drive in varied conditions and weather, and safely install tire chains.
  • Load and transport solid waste, trailers, equipment, gravel, water, fuel, and other materials to work areas throughout King County.
  • Perform and document safety inspections of tractors and trailers.
  • Check and refill fluid levels and tire pressure; refuel and maintain vehicle cleanliness and operability.
  • Document trip activities and complete required trip reports.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience safely driving tractor/trailer, or similar combinations such as Class A tractor/trailer with multiple axles and specific weight limits.
  • Skilled in communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Skilled in working in a team environment and independently to complete assignments.

Required Licenses

  • Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with current WA DOT Medical Card and Air Brake Endorsement

It Would Be Great If You Also Bring

  • Additional relevant experience driving combinations such as side dump trailers, wastewater tankers, fuel trucks, or lowboy trailers

Working Conditions

  • Work Location: Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, Maple Valley, WA
  • Work Schedule: Full-time; schedules may include 4/10, 5/8, or 7/10 work weeks; overtime eligibility under FLSA
  • Union Representation: Teamsters, Local 174
  • Duration: Six (6) months for the TLT positions; eligible King County employees may have special duty assignments

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to get in and out of Class A Tractor multiple times a day
  • Ability to attach/detach hydraulic and air lines
  • Ability to operate a pressure washer
