The Director of EHSS will lead and oversee all Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability programs across the TriMas global manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for establishing and implementing strategies that ensure regulatory compliance, safeguard the health and safety of employees, minimize environmental impact, and promote sustainable practices. While the scope includes all aspects of EHSS, particular emphasis will be placed on driving world-class safety performance across 37 facilities in 13 countries. This individual will partner with executive leadership, regional site leaders, and functional teams to build a culture of safety and sustainability that aligns with our corporate values and supports operational excellence. This role is required to be on-site 5 days at the Bloomfield Hills, MI location. Essential duties and responsibilities include: Safety Leadership
Develop, implement, and continuously improve global safety programs, policies, and training. Lead efforts to eliminate workplace incidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses through proactive risk assessment and hazard mitigation. Standardize safety metrics, audits, and reporting across global sites to ensure accountability and continuous improvement. Champion a “Drive to Zero” safety culture at all levels of the organization.
Environmental & Sustainability
Ensure compliance with global environmental regulations related to emissions, waste management, water usage, and chemical handling. Lead initiatives to reduce the company’s environmental footprint through energy efficiency, waste reduction, and carbon reduction programs. Collaborate on process to collect Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, including implementing a supplier approach, and other relevant metrics to support customer requests and requirements. Support sustainability reporting, including ESG disclosures, CDP, and other stakeholder requirements.
Health & Occupational Hygiene
Implement programs to protect employee health, including industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and wellness initiatives. Collaborate with HR and Operations to ensure global health standards and occupational medical programs are in place.
Governance & Compliance
Monitor and interpret new regulations and industry standards, ensuring proactive compliance. Lead EHSS audits, assessments, and corrective action programs globally. Establish and track KPIs for safety, environmental, and sustainability performance. Lead TriMas’ annual EHS Flag Program.
Leadership & Culture
Provide strategic direction to regional leaders and site-level safety/environmental managers. Engage employees at all levels to embed EHSS into day-to-day operations and decision-making. Serve as the company’s EHSS representative with regulators, industry associations, and external stakeholders.
Security & Emergency Management
Develop and oversee corporate security protocols, including physical security, access control, and crisis response. Lead emergency management planning and response for incidents such as fires, injuries, spills, and security threats. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders during crisis events.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise EHSS staff and contractors; provide coaching, performance management, and professional development. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, legal, HR, and sustainability. Represent TriMas in industry forums and regulatory engagements.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities: Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to implementation. Passionate advocate for employee safety and wellbeing. Collaborative leader who can work across global functions and cultures. Results-driven with the ability to balance compliance, risk management, and operational excellence. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to analyze complex data and regulatory frameworks. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and EHSS management systems. Ability to travel 25–30% globally. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field. Minimum 10–15 years of progressive EHSS leadership experience in a global manufacturing environment. Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, ISO, and international EHSS standards. Proven track record of reducing incident rates and driving cultural change in safety. Experience in sustainability and ESG reporting is a plus.
