Under the direction of the Director, the Associate Director of Campus Public Safety works to establish safety protocols, policy, and operational standards. The primary responsibility of this position is to manage/supervise the Campus Public Safety Officers. The Associate Director will also assume the responsibilities of the Executive Director of Campus Public Safety in that Director’s absence. This position will be expected to work a flexible assignment that may include emergency call outs, nights and weekends, and on-call when needed. The Associate Director will offer psychological safety and a sense of welcomeness for our diverse students on both TCC campuses - Tacoma and Gig Harbor. Responsibilities

To Campus Public Safety Director

Assumes the responsibilities of the Executive Director of Campus Public Safety in that person’s absence and provides support to other areas of administration within the department as needed. Ensures management is kept apprised of critical information directly or indirectly affecting Public Safety on campus. Assists in developing and implementing the department’s Annual Strategic Action Plan (ASAP). Personnel Responsibilities

Manages, develops, trains, and supervises TCC’s Campus Public Safety plans and Safety Officers. Supervises and evaluates full and part-time Campus Public Safety officers in the performance of their duties. In conjunction with the Executive Director, ensures that campus safety officers are scheduled to provide the best possible service to the campus community. Creates and adjusts shift schedules at both campuses to maintain minimum staffing levels. Operational Responsibilities

Collaborates with campus administration regarding special events, policy, emergency procedures, and all other campus safety-related activities. Develops strategy to manage campus traffic at special events and during the academic year. Issues traffic and parking citations according to established procedures. Investigates crimes and other incidents occurring on campus. Prepares crime or incident reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace. Reviews the reports of subordinates and assumes responsibility for follow-up. Investigates and reports the presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings; deals with disturbances according to established policy. Develops crime prevention activities; enforces laws, traffic regulations, and safety regulations on campus; and cites violators. Patrols campus buildings; protects individuals and controls crowds during assemblies or disturbances. Ensures Campus Safety Department operations and services are maintained to the highest level of performance. Patrols college campus on foot, bicycle, cart, or vehicle and answers calls to protect college students, staff, and faculty; protects college property and facilities against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Responds to alarms and radio calls. Ensures all employees are trained and prepared to perform duties associated with Cleary and the Violence Against Women’s Act (VAWA). Handles performance and behavioral issues promptly, documents all phases of progressive discipline, and adheres to applicable laws and regulations. Conducts and/or coordinates Campus Public Safety related workshops and trainings. Assists with TCC’s Behavior Intervention & Threat Assessment (BITA) as needed. Receives complaints and requests for assistance from students, visitors, or college personnel. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students and others; provides information and direction to the public as appropriate. Assumes responsibility for the exchange of information with other college personnel and departments and various public safety and law enforcement agencies. Operates a variety of security tools and equipment including radio equipment, vehicles, officer gear, uniforms, and relevant attachments. Chairs screening committees for part-time and full-time CPS staff to include applicants' credentials, reviews, and interviews. Performs other related duties as assigned. Emergency Management Responsibilities

Investigates unusual or potentially dangerous facility conditions; reports detected leaks or malfunctions of electric, plumbing, heating, or other equipment; notifies appropriate persons regarding impaired equipment; takes appropriate emergency action. Supervises the evacuation of classrooms and buildings in emergency situations as necessary. Assumes a leadership role in an emergency incident command structure and is part of TCC’s Incident Response Team. Supervises implementation, maintenance, and use of critical operations systems such as Omnigo, Avigilon, and other surveillance and alarm systems. Implements and supports public safety training programs directed at students, staff, faculty, and administrators to comply with Cleary and VAWA requirements. Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. 3 years relevant experience in security, corrections, police work, military police, or other law enforcement work. OR

equivalent education and/or experience. Supervisory or lead/head worker experience in a security-related field. 2 years of working in a college or university setting preferred. Required Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a criminal history background check prior to employment. Possess current, valid, unrestricted driver’s license. Possess current CPR & First Aid Certification which includes training on the Automated Electronic Defibrillator or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Ability to perform regular walking and patrolling on a daily basis. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Desired Performance and Abilities

Required Work Schedule and Work Environment

This is a full-time exempt administrative position contracted on an annual basis scheduled to work Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Summer schedule may vary to four 10-hour days. Must be available on-call and occasional evenings, nights, and weekends as needed. Work location is Building 14 on the TCC main campus but may extend to Gig Harbor campus.
