10%

for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present. PLUS King County Premium Pay - If assigned to a permanent duty station in King County, employees will receive

5%

Premium Pay calculated from their base salary. IF BILINGUAL If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently, employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a

administers the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA)

by developing and enforcing rules that protect workers from hazardous job conditions. Our inspectors visit about 5,000 workplaces each year and cite businesses that violate health and safety rules. Every day, Washington’s maritime workers face risks from heavy machinery, high-risk construction, confined spaces, and extreme environments. Your work ensures those workers return home safely. You won’t just enforce rules — you’ll influence culture, prevent tragedies, and leave a lasting mark on the safety of our state. Our mission is simple yet vital: Keep Washington Safe and Working. As a senior-level investigator, you’ll take the lead on complex safety inspections, serious accident investigations, and fatality cases in one of the most dynamic and high-hazard industries in the state. Learn more about DOSH here: 50 Years of DOSH Some of what you’ll do: Conduct in-depth investigations of fatalities, catastrophic accidents, and serious hazards in maritime operations such as shipbuilding, marine cargo handling, and commercial diving. Evaluate compliance with workplace safety laws (WISHA) and recommend corrective actions, citations, or penalties when needed. Collaborate with employers, unions, attorneys, and worker representatives to build safer workplaces. Testify in legal proceedings and work closely with the Attorney General’s office on complex cases. Stay sharp through continuous training and professional development in cutting-edge safety practices. And much more! REQUIRED: You qualify for this role if you have one of the following: Five years of full-time professional experience as an employer's safety director or manager, industrial hygienist, or safety and health specialist in maritime heavy industry. OR Five years of experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety and Health Investigator (CISHI) or equivalent experience as a Federal OSHA or other state plan journey-level safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist, with at least 2 years’ experience in heavy industrial maritime industry. OR Seven years of experience in the maritime heavy industry. OR Certified Safety Professional through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) AND at least two years of experience working in maritime heavy industry. * Examples of maritime heavy industry experience include Coast Guard vessel inspections, cargo handling, ship building, commercial diving, marine construction, marine terminal operations or USCG/US Navy active duty. Additional requirements: Must possess a valid unrestricted driver license While driving a state vehicle or personally owned vehicle (POV) for state business an employee must have a valid unrestricted driver license and may not have convictions for driving under the influence or driving offense that endangered or harmed others within the past 7 years. Individuals driving POVs for state business must receive permission in advance to use their POV, and possess and show proof of personal liability insurance. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current mileage reimbursement rate. A valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is preferred prior to hiring or must be obtained within six months of hiring and maintained throughout the term of employment. Cost to employee to obtain and/or maintain reimbursed by L&I. DESIRED: Certified Marine Chemist Bilingual preferred; persons of all languages are encouraged to apply. Bilingual jobs include a 5% salary increase for dual language responsibilities. What else we are looking for: Experience within BOTH maritime and safety. A strong desire to ensure worker safety with a thorough understanding of safety and health rules and regulations and ability to identify safety related hazards in a variety of workplaces. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills with ability to write comprehensive and concise reports detailing identified hazards. Willing and able to work with hostile clients or customers (both internal and external). Knowledge of Safety and Health Rules and Regulations, the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and the federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The ability to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.
