Overview
Search for the Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). The next Chair will lead a vital clinical department at a top-tier medical school, shaping anesthesia care services within a dynamic health care environment and advancing the Keck School's mission areas of research, education, patient care, and community across USC’s network of hospitals, clinics, and affiliate sites. USC Anesthesiology is central to the Keck School’s missions, intersecting with multiple service lines and delivering high-acuity, complex care. The Department comprises 129 full-time faculty, 18 staff, 72 USC+LA General residents, 10 Keck School sponsored residents, and 11 fellows. It houses two residency programs, including a newly launched Keck School sponsored residency program that began in December 2024. Reporting to the Dean of the Keck School, the Chair will provide strategic leadership, define and implement a vision, and build a cohesive, people-first departmental culture. The Chair will refine clinical operations, apply sound financial judgment for long-term sustainability, and lead partnerships across the enterprise to position the Department as a leader in education, research, and patient care in Los Angeles and beyond. Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership to the Department and implement a unifying vision aligned with Keck School and health system priorities. Refine and strengthen clinical operations, improve operating room efficiency, and enhance the patient experience through collaborative, team-based care. Strengthen faculty recruitment, retention, and mentorship across subspecialties. Serve as a visible, collaborative leader to deepen partnerships across USC’s medical enterprise and community affiliates. Promote excellence across the Department’s educational programs. Grow research activity to support the Keck School’s mission and inform patient care. Elevate the Department’s national profile and reputation. Qualifications
The successful candidate must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree, board certification in Anesthesiology, and an academic record commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor. Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated compensation for this position is about $700,000 – $800,000 annually and is commensurate with related experience and qualifications. Relocation assistance is available.
