Overview
Post-Doctoral Fellow (Neglected Tropical Diseases) – The Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney. Based in Kensington, NSW, Australia. Full-time (35 hours per week), 12-month fixed term contract with possible extension. Remuneration: Academic Level A or B ($113K - $150K) + 17% Super and leave loading. Responsibilities
Conduct laboratory-based research to support projects focused on detection techniques for multiple neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and other infectious diseases. Contribute to studies assessing NTD burden in endemic countries and evaluating the impact of disease control strategies. Participate in epidemiological studies and assist with sample collection for laboratory analysis. Perform key laboratory tasks such as serological analysis, DNA extraction, and PCR-based diagnostics. Support data management, statistical analysis, and dissemination of findings. Level A: contribute to collaborative research projects, manage laboratory operations, maintain datasets, and assist with student supervision. Level B: develop an independent research portfolio, lead project design, contribute to competitive funding applications, and mentor students and junior researchers. Qualifications
Level A: A PhD in biomedical sciences, epidemiology, public health, biostatistics or a similar field. Demonstrated experience in molecular and cell biology with a focus on infectious diseases, including qPCR, ELISAs, multi-bead serological assays, and microscopy. Excellent data and specimen management skills and experience with quantitative analysis using a statistical package (e.g., SAS, Stata). Proven ability to stay up to date with disciplinary knowledge; demonstrated experience writing and publishing peer-reviewed articles and/or reports for non-expert stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams. Experience working in teams, collaborating across disciplines, and building effective relationships; knowledge of infectious disease control programmes relevant to low- and middle-income countries is desirable. Level B: A track record of significant involvement with the profession/industry; demonstrated high-quality research outcomes with leadership potential; strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
