Seasonal Tax Examiner I - (250006A1) Description. Temporary Seasonal opportunities: We are hiring seasonal staff to assist during the tax filing season (approximately 6 months starting in January). Full-time and part-time schedules are available: Full-time Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm; part-time Monday through Friday 10:30am-4:30pm. These positions are hybrid with training conducted on-site at 200 Arlington Street, Chelsea, MA. Agency Overview: The Department of Revenue’s core mission is to collect the revenues required to support the business of the Commonwealth, to make a difference in the lives of children by enforcing the financial responsibilities of parenthood, and to assist Massachusetts cities and towns in sound and efficient fiscal management. Our vision is to conduct our operations in a manner that inspires public confidence in government by administering and enforcing tax, child support and municipal finance laws in ways that are innovative, customer-focused and transparent. Division Overview: The Tax Administration Division is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing noncompliant taxpayers. The division audits the tax returns of businesses and individuals filed, including sales/use, meals, rooms occupancy and special fuels, which are subject to examination by the Tax Administration Division staff. Responsibilities
Respond to taxpayer telephone inquiries received on DOR’s tax hotlines and provide taxpayers with technical assistance by explaining state tax laws, rules, regulations, and policies. Demonstrate strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; perform computer research by accessing taxpayers’ account information and complete all casework/paperwork in accordance with Departmental Policy. Coordinate with callers to gather necessary information and documentation through tactful questioning while following written and oral instructions. Assist with duties related to Refund & Fraud as defined in departmental policy, including handling taxpayer inquiries and performing necessary research and documentation tasks. Qualifications
Effective communication skills and strong analytical abilities. Ability to provide oral instructions over the telephone in a precise, understandable manner and to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to gather information by examining records/documents through tactful questioning of individuals; exercises sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information. Prior experience in a call center or related fields such as customer service, collections, and/or tax administration is preferred. Good writing skills and comfortable performing computer research by accessing taxpayers’ account information. Preferred Qualifications (Refund & Fraud)
Same core skills as above with emphasis on effective communication, strong analytical abilities, and the ability to provide clear oral instructions. Ability to gather information by examining records/documents and through tactful questioning; exercises sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information; proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
