The Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), an agency within the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR), protects consumers by ensuring professionals comply with state licensing laws. DOL oversees 26 boards of registration, licensing and regulating more than 500,000 individuals and businesses across over 100 trades and professions. DOL also licenses and regulates the Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) and the Office of Private Occupational Schools. The mission of DOL is to protect the public health, safety and welfare by licensing qualified individuals and businesses to provide services to consumers. About the Role
The basic purpose of the Elevator Inspector I is to ensure the safe operation of elevators and related machinery. The general duties and responsibilities are to inspect and test elevators, dumb waiters, moving walkways, sidewalk elevators, hoists, lifts, escalators and related machinery for compliance with laws; approve plans for installation and conduct practical tests on these devices; issue certificates of inspection; and perform related work as required. Duties and Responsibilities:
(these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive) Inspects and tests elevators, dumb waiters, moving walkways, sidewalk elevators, lifts, escalators, hoists and related machinery by observing mechanical and electrical systems and safety control devices from inside, on top of, or underneath such equipment; issues or revokes certificates of inspection and advises contractors or building owners of violations to ensure that elevators meet legal operating requirements. Reviews and approves or denies plans and specifications for proposed installations or alterations of elevators and related machinery. Investigates accidents and complaints of defective or unsafe equipment by interviewing witnesses or examining evidence to determine cause, extent of damage, injuries sustained, etc. Provides technical assistance by responding orally or in writing to inquiries from contractors, local building officials, complainants or others to interpret and explain safety codes and laws governing the installation, maintenance and operation of elevator systems. Orders shutdowns and/or corrective action on unsafe elevators to ensure compliance with operating requirements as set forth by law. Prepares documentation in the form of narrative or technical reports on elevator accidents or investigation results for use in court action. Reviews complaints or allegations related to elevator systems operated in violation of safety codes and laws to determine whether an investigation is necessary. Performs periodic inspections during construction or alteration to assure conformance with approved plans, and inspects temporary workmen’s elevators to ensure safety. Conducts on-site elevator operator licenses examinations as required. Performs related work such as coordinating and scheduling inspections with other agencies; contacting parties to verify or clarify information; compiling statistical data; maintaining logs; and representing the agency at hearings or meetings. Uses technology and handheld devices, various software and email systems, and inputs data into computer software systems. Attends training on new or changing devices and software used by the Commonwealth. Working Conditions:
Elevator Inspectors work under hazards associated with construction sites, elevator shafts, moving machinery, and electrical systems; work outdoors in all weather; may travel for job-related purposes; stand for prolonged periods and may be on-call. Must be able to work different shifts including graveyard shifts, Monday-Friday and/or Sunday-Thursday. The successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal background check (CORI) and a physical exam prior to hire. Please attach a resume and cover letter when applying for this position. Applicants must have a current and valid license as an Elevator Constructor, Maintenance Man, or Repairman issued by the Division of Professional Licensure, Office of Public Safety and Inspections, Section 71B of the Massachusetts General Law.
