The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs, and facilities for all who live, learn, work, and play in Torrance. The mission of the
Community Services Department
is to enrich the community through recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for persons of all abilities. The department comprises five divisions: Administrative Services, Cultural Services, Library Services, Parks Services, and Recreation Services, which work collaboratively to meet the department’s goals.
Farmers’ Market The City of Torrance Community Services Department is accepting applications for a Program Leader to assist with its Certified Farmers’ Markets held on Tuesdays and designated weekdays. These markets are well-attended, fast-paced, and feature seasonal produce and local food from approximately 215 farmers and vendors, twice a week.
The Position The
Program Leader
will support the Senior Program Specialist in coordinating the Service for Seniors project, involving gathering produce boxes at the Torrance Certified Farmers’ Market and delivering them to various City hubs, including Senior Centers and Libraries. The role also includes assisting with packaging, delivery, and pick-up of produce boxes, and supporting cooking demonstrations at Senior Centers to promote healthy eating and community engagement.
Hours:
This is a grant-funded, recurrent, part-time, non-civil service position, approximately 8 hours/week, funded through September 29, 2027. The position requires working every Tuesday and Saturday during the Farmers' Market, from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Additional hours may be scheduled during the day or evenings.
Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typically, six months of recent, paid or volunteer part-time work related to recreation or community programs involving public contact is desirable.
License and/or Certificates Negative tuberculin test.
Ideal Candidate
Two years of recent, paid experience assisting with coordinating a certified Farmers' Market or large-scale public event(s) with frequent public contact;
Knowledge of Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs);
Knowledge of shopping at Farmers’ Markets;
Knowledge of event layout and setup procedures;
Safe work practices and procedures;
Effective customer service techniques;
Ability to work effectively with others;
Skills in instructing, training, and evaluating staff;
Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
Effective oral and written communication skills; and
Ability to adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
