Augusta University . The Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is hiring a Department Chair for the Department of English and World Languages. This is a tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and is anticipated to begin July 2026. The preferred candidate will have a PhD in English or a World Language or closely related discipline and meet the qualifications for professor in one of the departmental programs. Desired candidates should have experience directing undergraduate programs and/or serving in an administrative role. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department Chair will provide leadership and support to the Department of English and World Languages and its programs. The Department Chair will work collaboratively with members of the dean's office, the Pamplin College department chairs, faculty, and staff to support the college's strategic plan and to ensure ongoing assessment of the Department’s programs and student success.

Responsibilities

Program and curricular development Budget and personnel management including personnel evaluation Faculty research activities Student recruitment activities Student progression, retention, and graduation support Mentoring departmental faculty Class scheduling and enrollment management Revising and/or creating department planning documents Assessment and accreditation reporting as required Support for fundraising activities as requested Other activities may be needed and will be assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications

Professor: PhD in English or a World Language and two or more years of experience serving in an academic leadership role such as a Program Director or Department Chair. Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience as of July 1, 2026. Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be: Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation. Evidence of ability as a teacher. Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned. Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and, Desirable personal qualities judged based on personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in serving as an Assistant Chair or interim Chair. PhD in English or a World Language or closely related discipline

Shift / Salary / Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round. The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time. Salary and compensation are commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds. Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, 13 paid holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, retirement plans, tuition waiver, wellness options, and more. Eligible full-time employees may participate in the Tuition Assistance Program after more than 6 months of employment. Rank and salary are determined at the time of hire and are based on factors including experience, education, credentials, training, internal equity, and market data. Advancement through the faculty ranks is through the annual Promotion and Tenure process (typically five-year increments).
