The position requires immediate, then increasing supervision via Field Training Officer, Police Sergeant or higher ranking official. Incumbents perform and document varied law enforcement assignments through patrol, specialty assignments, and training, while performing related duties as required. Duties include: Patrol: respond to emergencies, administer first aid, investigate crimes and traffic incidents, preserve evidence, provide assistance to citizens, quell disturbances, initiate contacts, locate and apprehend violators, provide crowd/riot/traffic control, write reports, and testify in court. Traffic: enforce traffic laws, use designated equipment, conduct hearings related to towed vehicles, write collision reports, investigate accidents, coordinate special event traffic control, and advise city personnel on traffic issues. School Resource: investigate campus crimes, monitor gang activity, liaison between school staff and the police department, coordinate school security and fingerprinting programs, and conduct presentations. Investigations: develop leads, interview witnesses, interrogate suspects, collect and preserve evidence, prepare warrants, review reports for trends, and work with the District Attorney on cases. Knowledge
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, codes, and court decisions related to law enforcement. Policies and procedures, firearms safety, safety practices, report writing, basic law enforcement terminology, and use of computerized information systems. English usage, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Abilities
Communicate clearly in person, over the radio, and by phone; convey instructions authoritatively. Read and interpret laws, orders, training bulletins, court decisions, and department directives; explain law enforcement activities to the public. Exercise tact and good judgment; manage stress and respond to challenging situations; pursue suspects over varying terrain; tolerate irregular hours and holidays. Work with diverse individuals; perform duties wearing full uniform and equipment; complete other police-related assignments as directed. Licenses and Certificates
Possess a valid California Class C Driver's License with satisfactory driving record. Possess a valid POST basic police academy certification or recertification. Education and Experience
Required: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Any combination of experience and education that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities. Other Requirements
Pass a background investigation per POST guidelines; no felony convictions; no disqualifying prior illegal drug use. Must be at least 21 years old; be in good physical condition with strength and agility to perform duties. Meet department medical, physical, and psychological standards; vision requirements (20/30 corrected or 20/80 uncorrected with glasses/contacts). Citizen or eligible for citizenship in the U.S. within three years of applying per Government Code sections 1031 and 1031.5. Benefits
