This position handles Architect and Engineer liability claims that can be highly complex and valued in the multi-million dollar range. Insurance litigation and coverage interpretation/analysis experience is strongly desired. The role involves attending mediations and negotiating settlements involving insurance claims. This professional liability position is dedicated exclusively to handling claims against design professionals including Architects, Engineers, Surveyors, Construction Managers, contractors and specialty contractors. New assignments require significant investigation and coordination due to technical complexity. Using corporate Claim policies and departmental guidelines, the claims consultant reviews coverage, secures and analyzes information to determine liability and substantiate damages, directs and controls litigation, and negotiates and settles claims. The position offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule and is available in any location near a CNA office.

Responsibilities

Manages an inventory of highly complex claims with large exposures, verifying policy coverage, conducting investigations, developing resolution strategies, and authorizing disbursements within authority limits.

Ensures exceptional customer service by managing all aspects of the claim, providing timely updates and responding to inquiries, and acting as a dedicated claim professional as needed.

Verifies coverage and establishes reserves by interpreting policy language and partnering with coverage counsel on complex matters, estimating potential claim valuation, and following claim handling protocols.

Leads focused investigations to determine compensability, liability and damages by gathering contracts and other documents, taking statements, and coordinating with experts and other parties as necessary.

Develops and executes claim resolution strategies, including reserve management, negotiating settlements, partnering with counsel for complex litigation, and authorizing payments within authority.

Establishes and manages claim budgets, sourcing resources, and delivering high-quality service efficiently.

Identifies subrogation/salvage opportunities or potential fraud and refers to appropriate resources for investigation.

Maintains quality standards by following company protocols, ensuring accurate and timely work, proper documentation, and timely resolution and payment of claims.

Keeps senior leadership informed of significant risks and losses with loss summaries and oversight-ready reporting.

Maintains subject matter expertise and regulatory compliance by staying current on commercial insurance laws, regulations and trends for the line of business.

Mentors and develops less experienced Claim Professionals and may deliver training.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices.

Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

Strong work ethic, time management and organizational skills.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high productivity.

Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex settlements and interpret complex commercial policies.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn business software.

Openness to diverse opinions and ideas.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.

Typically a minimum of six years of relevant experience, preferably in claim handling.

Must have or obtain and maintain an Insurance Adjuster License within 90 days of hire where applicable.

Prior negotiation experience.

Professional designations preferred (e.g. CPCU).

In Illinois/New York/California, the average base pay range for a Complex Claims Consultant is $113,000 to $160,000. Salary determinations are based on factors including relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually.
