This opening is for a Complex Claims Consultant to handle Architect and Engineer liability claims, which can be highly complex and valued in the multi-million dollar range. Insurance litigation and coverage interpretation/analysis experience is strongly desired. The role involves attending mediations and negotiating settlements involving insurance claims. This professional liability position will be dedicated exclusively to handling claims against design professionals including Architects, Engineers, Surveyors, Construction Managers, contractors and specialty contractors. New assignments require significant investigation and coordination due to technical complexity. Using corporate claim policies and departmental guidelines, the claims consultant reviews coverage, analyzes information to determine liability and damages, directs and controls litigation, and negotiates and settles claims. This position offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule and is available in any location near a CNA office. JOB DESCRIPTION: Essential Duties & Responsibilities Manages an inventory of highly complex claims with large exposures, following company protocols to verify policy coverage, conduct investigations, develop resolution strategies, and authorize disbursements within authority limits. Ensures exceptional customer service by managing all aspects of the claim, providing timely updates, and responding promptly to inquiries; may act as a dedicated claim professional to appropriate policy holders as needed. Verifies coverage and establishes reserves by interpreting policy language, partnering with coverage counsel on complex matters, estimating potential claim value, and following claim handling protocols. Leads focused investigations to determine compensability, liability and damages by gathering contracts and other documents, taking statements, and working with experts as necessary. Resolves claims by developing and executing a resolution strategy, managing reserves, negotiating settlements, and coordinating with counsel on complex litigation; authorizes payments within authority. Manages claim budgets by achieving timely resolution, overseeing resources, and delivering high-quality service efficiently. Addresses subrogation/salvage opportunities or potential fraud by evaluating facts and referring to appropriate resources for further investigation. Maintains quality standards by ensuring adherence to protocols, accuracy, timely work, and proper documentation to resolve and pay claims promptly. Keeps senior leadership informed of risks and losses by completing loss summaries and presenting succinct updates. Maintains subject matter expertise and compliance with regulatory requirements by staying current on commercial insurance laws, regulations, and trends for the line of business. Mentors and delivers training to less experienced Claim Professionals. Reporting Relationship Typically Director or above Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices. Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Analytical and investigative mindset with critical thinking and decision-making abilities. Strong work ethic with time management and organizational skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high productivity. Proven ability to negotiate complex settlements. Experience interpreting complex commercial insurance policies and coverage. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn business-related software. Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience. Typically a minimum of six years of relevant experience, preferably in claim handling. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an Insurance Adjuster License within 90 days of hire, where applicable. Prior negotiation experience. Professional designations preferred (e.g., CPCU). In Illinois/New York/California, the average base pay range for a Complex Claims Consultant is $113,000 to $160,000. Salary determinations are based on factors including experience, skills, certifications and location. In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of compensation.
