Project Engineer/Engineering Associate
POSTING #SG-364-25E The Sanitation Districts is currently recruiting to fill two (2) Engineers/Engineering Associates in the Wastewater Management Department, Industrial Waste Section. This position will report to our Joint Administration Office in Whittier. OUR MISSION
The Sanitation Districts protect public health and the environment through innovative and cost-effective wastewater and solid waste management, and in doing so convert waste into resources such as recycled water, energy and recycled materials. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
To perform professional project engineering work and coordinate progressively more complex projects in the Industrial Waste Section. JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of a Supervising Engineer, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of routine and complex industrial wastewater permit and industrial source control tasks. Typical duties include: evaluation of applications for Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permits; evaluation of industrial wastewater pretreatment systems; determination of an applicant's ability to be in compliance with various technical, regulatory, and legal wastewater discharge requirements; interaction with industry contacts regarding their permits and their impacts on the Districts' facilities; review of drawings from industrial users to determine adequacy of proposed pretreatment equipment; determination of hydraulic capacity in the Districts' wastewater collection system to accommodate the industrial user; determination of a facility's connection fee; evaluation of industrial users’ surcharge statements; development and implementation of the elements of a source control program such as data collection and analysis for identification of sources of chemical constituents in the Districts' wastewater collection systems; development of discharge limits and/or monetary charge programs for industrial dischargers; collaboration with industrial users and other agencies to control sources of key chemical constituents; preparation of letters, reports, calculations, charts and drawings; and performance of related duties as required. REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver's license And one of the following options: ENGINEERING ASSOCIATE II LEVEL:
Option A: A bachelor's degree in a pertinent engineering discipline and a master's degree in a pertinent engineering discipline; Option B: A bachelor's degree in a related science and an Engineer-In-Training Certificate and a master's degree in a pertinent engineering discipline; Option C: A bachelor's degree in engineering and two years of professional engineering experience obtained after earning a bachelor's degree in engineering. ENGINEERING ASSOCIATE III LEVEL:
Option A: Two (2) years of experience as an Engineering Associate II Option B: Four (4) years of professional engineering experience subsequent to earning a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited and recognized college or university. ENGINEER LEVEL:
Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer with the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists And one of the following options: Option A: A master's degree in engineering and three years of professional engineering experience; Option B: A PhD in engineering and two years of professional engineering experience; Option C: Six years of professional engineering experience subsequent to earning a bachelor's degree in engineering. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of industrial wastewater pretreatment programs and regulations; experience with permitting for industrial wastewater dischargers; familiarity with emerging contaminants and industries associated with them; superior technical writing and communication skills; ability to think critically, develop alternatives and recommend solutions; ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a variety of people; ability to work independently and be part of a team.
