We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Construction Controller to manage the financial aspects of our development, commercial, and residential projects. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with strong analytical skills, capable of managing budgets, forecasting financial outcomes, and ensuring the financial health of the company. The Construction Controller must demonstrate strong collaboration and leadership capabilities coupled with outstanding organization and time management skills. This role will oversee the financial operations of our construction projects, ensuring accurate accounting, budget management, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in construction accounting, excellent analytical abilities, and effective communication skills.
Responsibilities
Oversee the annual budgeting process and the preparation and distribution of the monthly reports on budgets
Identify opportunities to improve financial and operational systems and cost effectiveness
Manage the annual audit process
Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports, including work in progress, percentage of completion, profit and loss, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
Manage multi-location accounting staff to include Accounts Receivable (AR), Accounts Payable (AP), Collections, and other related functions
Manage 1099, state and federal, and payroll related quarterly and annual tax filings and returns
Prepare, analyze, and present weekly, quarterly, and annual operating results for each vertical by individual and location
Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
Prepare and manage department budgets including regular updates to stakeholders
Establish and monitor internal control processes to ensure accounting activities are consistent and in accordance with legal, regulatory, GAAP, and company policies and procedures
Monitor internal audit process including scheduling external auditors and performance of financial risk assessments
Maintains knowledge of industry trends and changes in accounting regulations to maintain compliance
Monitor and control project costs against budget plan
Collaborate with operations and other stakeholders to review financial performance and implement corrective actions as needed
Coordinate with external auditors and customers for project audits and financial reviews
Implement and maintain robust financial controls and procedures
Conduct subcontractor prequalification reviews
Monitor daily cash management and cash control processes
Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure financial performance and project success
Provide regular reports and updates to senior and executive management
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA, CMA, or CCIFP certification is preferred but not required
Minimum of 7 years of experience in construction accounting
Proven knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Advanced understanding of construction industry financial practices and regulations
Proficient in construction ERP software
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial analysis tools
Highly organized with excellent attention to detail
High degree of integrity and honesty
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Ability to collaborate effectively and lead teams of accountants and financial professionals
Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
Capacity to explain complex financial information to non-financial personnel
Ability to align financial management with the overall strategic goals of the company
Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate complex data verbally, written, and through presentation media to various levels of the organization
