What’s in this role The Director will lead a team responsible for the accurate and timely reconciliation of all incoming payments from payers and outgoing payments to receivers. This is critical for the integrity of financial reporting, specifically for funds held for customers and corresponding customer deposit liabilities. BILL serves over 400K businesses and processes over $75B (30 million transactions) in quarterly payment volume through various payment products. The role is based in San Jose, CA or Draper, UT, or can be remote, and will drive automation and efficiency throughout the reconciliation and ledgering lifecycle. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience directing multi-billion dollar payment reconciliation and ledgering processes across diverse payment methods (check, ACH, wire, international, real-time payments, and card acquiring/issuing), with a deep understanding of financial controls, regulatory requirements, and best practices in payment operations. Responsibilities

Oversee and manage a high-performing team of payment reconciliation specialists, ensuring accurate and timely reconciliations of various bank and payment processor accounts. Strategically partner with accounting, product, engineering, and treasury teams to design, develop, and implement a robust new reconciliation and ledgering infrastructure. Proactively evaluate and identify gaps in current reconciliation processes, collaborating with accounting, product, engineering, treasury, and payment operations to drive impactful changes that enhance accuracy and speed. Champion innovation by identifying and implementing opportunities where automation or AI can drive efficiencies in recording, reconciliation, and reporting of all payment activity. Collaborate with product and engineering teams to design and implement new payment products and enhancements, ensuring reconciliation considerations are integrated from inception. Develop and implement strong internal controls over payment reconciliation and ledgering processes to mitigate financial risks. Analyze large datasets to identify reconciliation discrepancies, trends, and potential issues, providing insightful recommendations for resolution. Manage month-end and quarter-end close processes related to payment reconciliation and ledgering, ensuring accurate financial data reflection. Develop SLAs for completing reconciliations and resolution of discrepancies. Regulatory Reporting & Audit Support

Support the BILL compliance team with accurate and timely reporting to regulatory bodies (e.g., MTL). Provide comprehensive support for regulatory examinations and financial statement audits, including preparing documentation and responding to inquiries. Leadership & Systems

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing payment reconciliation and reporting team, fostering accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Identify, evaluate, and implement cutting-edge tools and technologies to automate repetitive tasks and enhance team productivity. Collaborate effectively with Product and Engineering teams to enhance data quality within core platforms, supporting automation and innovation initiatives. Act as a trusted advisor within the controllership function, providing expert guidance on payment reconciliation and ledgering matters. What we’d Love to See

Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and/or reconciliations, with significant leadership responsibility Experience in FinTech, payments, or financial institutions with high payment velocity across multiple methods Deep understanding of payment processing systems, ledgering systems and payment types (ACH, Wire, Check, Cards, RTP, cross-border) Advanced proficiency with Excel and Google Sheets for data analysis Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to identify root causes and implement solutions Excellent written and verbal communication, able to convey complex financial concepts clearly Proven ability to document complex process flows and propose improvements Proven leadership experience managing and developing a high-performing team Experience with Blackline’s transaction matching module is a plus The salary ranges shown are location-based. San Jose pay range: $172,600–$216,300 USD. Draper, UT pay range: $146,700–$183,900 USD. These ranges may vary based on experience and location; they may be eligible for bonuses and equity, along with a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k), FSA/HSA, paid holidays, PTO, and other benefits).
