CONSULTANT IN OBSTETRIC MEDICINE Organisation context

The Maternal Medicine Service provides a mixed secondary and tertiary service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary service as the Maternal Medicine Centre for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network covering Buckinghamshire, East and West Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire and adjacent parts of Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, with a total population approaching 3 million. There are approximately 7,500 births per year throughout the Trust and approximately 40,000 births per year in the Thames Valley Network footprint. Main duties of the job
The post-holder’s duties as a Consultant in Obstetric Medicine will primarily be in the Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital. There may be clinic sessions at other units in the region. The post involves a mixed secondary and tertiary service and includes management of maternal medicine inpatients, with multi-disciplinary antenatal and post-natal clinics and a pre-conception clinic for women with medical problems. The post-holder will have a desk in an office in Maternity alongside colleagues, with a computer and intranet/Wi-Fi access and secretarial support. This is a less than full-time 4 PA post (0.4 WTE). The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching hospital. The post-holder will be required to teach and examine clinical students. It is anticipated that the post-holder will contribute to the department’s research activities, with collaboration encouraged with colleagues in the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health (NDWRH). Teaching, training and research contributions will be included in the regular job plan, with the expectation of a possible Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer title and NDWRH affiliation for teaching and postgraduate supervision. Teaching in obstetric medicine is expected as the Trust is an accredited obstetric medicine training centre. There are opportunities to develop academic interests as well. Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement and external accreditation requirements as applicable to the Trust. Person and Professional Development
OUHFT supports continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and provides time and financial support for these activities. The post-holder must keep up to date in their practice and will be supported for study leave in line with Terms and Conditions of Service to support postgraduate training, CME and related personal development needs. The Trust has arrangements for annual appraisal and supports the revalidation process. The Maternal Medicine department provides secondary and tertiary care to approximately 7,500 and 40,000 births per year in the Thames Valley network. Inpatient activity includes around 15 inpatients typically, along with outpatient appointments per week. Emergency cover
The post holder will contribute to 24/7 on-call maternal medicine support for the region, alongside two other obstetric physicians and five consultant obstetricians with maternal medicine expertise, with trainee support as applicable. Management
The post-holder will work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures, manage administrative duties related to patient care and clinical service delivery under the lead clinician’s direction, and recognise resource limitations and the need for prior agreement for changes in practice. MBBS/MBChB; MRCP Professional training
CCT (or training and experience equivalent to CCT) in Acute and/or General Internal Medicine and/or Obstetric Medicine or within 6 months of accreditation A credential in Obstetric Medicine or equivalent Area of special interest that complements existing departmental skills Interest in research and postgraduate teaching with publications in peer-reviewed journals Level of responsibility
