This consultant post will provide Intensive Care and Anaesthetic services to cardiothoracic patients as part of a team of consultants delivering cardiac and thoracic surgery and cardiology procedures at the Trust. Applications from candidates with a CCT in Intensive Care Medicine with or without a specialty other than Anaesthesia are welcome, as well as applications from Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists with an interest in Intensive Care.
Main duties of the job This post is in Cardiothoracic Intensive care with or without another specialty. You will provide care for adult cardiothoracic and cardiology patients on the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit at the John Radcliffe. Responsibilities include direct care of admissions, leading ward rounds, follow-up outpatient clinics and consultations on relevant critically ill inpatients. For applicants from an anaesthesia background, there is the opportunity to provide anaesthesia for cardiac surgical, thoracic surgical and cardiological procedures depending upon expertise and service needs. Applicants with a CCT in another specialty will be able to perform clinical duties in that specialty subject to arrangement with the relevant specialty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities CSU Cardiothoracic anaesthesia, cardiothoracic critical care unit and theatres. There are approximately 900 cardiac surgical cases carried out at the JR with a full range of adult procedures and over 500 thoracic cases requiring intensive care support post-operatively. Cardiology procedures requiring anaesthetic support include ablation, complex device insertion and extractions, TAVI and other structural procedures.
CTCCU provides Level 2 and Level 3 care to post-operative cardiac and thoracic patients, plus some cardiology procedures. The unit handles over 1500 admissions per year, including emergency admissions from other hospitals and post-interventional patients. The unit supports organ systems with facilities such as ventricular assist devices and hemofiltration as required.
Teaching/Research Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust. The post-holder will be required to participate in teaching clinical students, training doctors in training and in clinical examinations. Teaching, training and research contributions will be included in the regular job plan review.
Clinical Governance The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will keep up-to-date with their area of practice. Study leave and CME will be supported to the extent allowed by the Trust's terms and conditions. Current allowance is 30 days over 3 years.
Management The post-holder will work within the Trust's management policies and procedures. They will undertake administrative duties related to patient care and the running of their service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
Person specification Qualifications
Full GMC Specialist Registration CCT or equivalent
Completed a recognised training programme in Intensive Care Medicine and/or Anaesthesia
MD, PhD
FFICM or equivalent Echocardiography Accreditation; TOE experience
Experience
Significant experience in the care of cardiothoracic and general intensive care patients
Ability to make decisions at consultant level and manage complex clinical problems
Clinical experience of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (e.g., ECMO, VAD, Impella)
Experience at consultant or equivalent level
Skills and Knowledge
Excellent leadership and ability to lead a clinical team in a teaching hospital
Strong organisational and time management skills; understanding of NHS management structures
Practical skills to function as a consultant in Intensive Care; strong teamwork
