Key responsibilities
Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues. Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems (switchgear, generators, UPS, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.). Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA). Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and collaborate with the Facility Manager to set team culture. Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams. May assist in the build-out of new facilities and participate in projects to increase facility efficiency. Work outside of normal business hours for routine maintenance as required, including responding to out-of-hours emergency calls. Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience. Coordinate with IT managers and other business leaders to manage capacity and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency. Ensure safety procedures are adhered to by vendors and Amazon staff. Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance. Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day-to-day tasks.
Physical requirements
Willingness and ability to work in physical conditions with reasonable accommodations, including lifting up to 39 pounds independently and participating in group lifts for 40+ pounds. Balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder; regular movement including walking, handling, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs, twisting, bending, and working above shoulders; use of hands and arms. Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.
A day in the life
This role acts as Amazon’s front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. You will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission-critical data center facility equipment including electrical support equipment (3-phase electrical systems, switchgear, UPS, PDUs, standby diesel generators, fuel systems) and mechanical equipment (CRA/U units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, pumps, motors). Additional support equipment includes fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment. The Chief Engineer directs, trains, and supports technicians in hands-on equipment troubleshooting and operations. You will manage projects from conception to completion, including independent work and collaboration with external support groups in local and global settings. You will create and deliver on milestones, obtain and track quotes, and document project results for future implementations.

Basic Qualifications
Technical (military/trade school) training or degree in a relevant field (e.g., electrical, mechanical). 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience. 3+ years of data center or mission-critical facilities experience (e.g., hospital, military facility, public safety facility).
Preferred Qualifications
4+ years of Data Center Engineering experience. Associates or Bachelor’s Degree. Experience leading a team.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. Base pay ranges from $83,100/year to $185,000/year, depending on market location and factors such as knowledge, skills, and experience.
