Overview
Lead Transportation Engineer role at WSP in the U.S. The candidate may be located in Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Herndon, VA; Baltimore, MD; Virginia Beach, VA; or Richmond, VA. This position focuses on highway design, roadway geometric design, plan production, drainage design, and related transportation infrastructure projects, with opportunities to lead technical design programs and mentor staff. Your Impact
Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients to the required level of effort and detail at deliverable milestones. Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda. Support or lead large-scale heavy civil engineering projects ensuring collaborators are aligned on roles and deliverables. Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, contracts, and related documents to ensure regulatory compliance and sound engineering practice. Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings and recommendations to address engineering, design, and construction issues or opportunities. Collect, compile, and analyze data from field surveys, GIS data, subsurface utilities, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. Apply high-level civil engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases from concept to operation. Conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions, resources, facilities, and transportation channels to determine conformance with rules, standards, and permits. Lead design and construction of infrastructure projects including rehabilitation, grading, drainage, pavement design, and safety plans; oversee implementation of advanced technologies and modeling techniques. Coordinate work within the team, lead projects, meet with clients on site, and mentor staff. Stay current with latest structural engineering techniques and practices. Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures; exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Responsibilities and Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline; post-graduate education may be preferred. 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design. P.E. license required (multi-state preferred). Proficiency with civil engineering principles, design/build processes, and permitting related to project work. Extensive knowledge of infrastructure and highway design. High proficiency with technical writing, office software, and design tools (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS). Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management across rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects. Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements. Strong ability to perform technical calculations, interpret plans and specifications, and compare to regulations. Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations related to construction and design. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members with QA/QC adherence. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to data and results. Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Proven track record of workplace safety and adherence to WSP safety policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond typical workweeks; occasional travel may be required.
