Full-Time Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead and oversee mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems) design projects for Education and commercial buildings in the Tampa Bay area. This is a leadership role that combines high-level technical design, project management, client interaction, and team mentorship. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of Florida Building Code, energy compliance, and mechanical system optimization for a wide range of building types including multi-family residential, retail, office, mixed-use, and light commercial developments. Key Responsibilities:
Lead mechanical design efforts across multiple residential and commercial projects from concept through construction administration. Oversee development of HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing systems in accordance with project requirements and local codes. Coordinate and review mechanical construction documents including load calculations, equipment selection, duct and piping layouts, and specifications. Interface directly with clients, architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to ensure alignment of project goals. Perform code compliance and energy analysis, ensuring systems meet local, state (Florida), and federal regulations. Supervise and mentor junior and mid-level mechanical engineers and designers. Review shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals during the construction phase; participate in site visits and inspections as needed. Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, client presentations, and scope development. Stay current with emerging mechanical technologies, materials, and sustainable design practices. Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) or related field. 10+ years of experience in mechanical design with a focus on residential and commercial building systems. Proficiency in mechanical load calculations, duct and piping layout, and equipment sizing. Strong knowledge of HVAC design, Florida Building Code, ASHRAE standards, and energy compliance. Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and HVAC design software (e.g., Trane Trace, HAP, EnergyPlus). Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to lead meetings and interface with clients. Preferred:
LEED accreditation or experience with sustainable design practices. P.E Licence or working towards it but not mandatory Experience managing project budgets and schedules. Familiarity with multidisciplinary coordination (electrical, structural, civil). Previous leadership experience in a consulting engineering or design-build environment.
