Police Equipment Room Specialist - Specification

Definition Under general supervision of the Business Services Manager, coordinates the Equipment Room operations within the Police Department; provides lead direction to Equipment Room staff; assigns, reviews and participates in a wide variety of duties involving the inventory control of police equipment, supplies, and fleet. Class Characteristics This classification coordinates and performs duties within the Equipment Room of the Police Department. It differs from general clerical roles by focus on modern inventory control and access to law enforcement equipment. Requires ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment, learn department policies, apply modern inventory control and process improvement, and solve problems with good judgment. Must be able to work holidays and irregular duty assignments as needed. • Maintains, suggests and implements improvements to the current inventory control system for the Police Equipment Room. Audits equipment inventory, vehicle key control, and other systems for accuracy and accountability. Coordinates daily operations of the Equipment Room which includes issuing/collecting police equipment, stocking supplies, performing vehicle trunk audits, preparing first aid and trauma kits for vehicles, signing for deliveries and issuing visitor badges, providing supplies to the Detention Center and Animal Shelter, and preparing vehicles for special events (e.g., Shop with a Cop, parades). Coordinates the tow, transportation, cleanup, repair and service of police vehicles. Periodically required to drive in fulfillment of transporting police vehicles. Coordinates radio repairs with Business Services. Coordinates repair of vehicle/report writing computers with the Information Technology Services Department. Schedules Equipment Room staffing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fills in for shift coverage as needed. Reviews and approves timesheets for accuracy. Provides technical and functional supervision to assigned Equipment Room staff. Maintains records of Equipment Room staff training and career development. Participates in the hiring of Equipment Room staff. Reports first floor building maintenance issues to PD Maintenance. Coordinates the charging/inspection of fire extinguishers. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers and other City employees using principles of good customer service. Marginal Functions Performs a variety of other duties in support of Equipment Room operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge : Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluations; modern inventory control methods; modern office management practices; computer equipment and software applicable to assignment; ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. Skills : Critical thinking, multitasking, problem solving, conflict resolution, process improvement and customer service. Abilities : Provide lead direction and training; learn and follow weapon handling procedures; maintain secure inventory control for law enforcement equipment; understand and apply department policies and procedures; multitask, prioritize and solve problems in a fast-paced environment; work in a structured, rank-organized environment.

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge and skills necessary for satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. Typical qualification: completion of High School or GED and two years of progressively responsible, full-time work experience in law enforcement inventory control, property, evidence, or related law enforcement experience.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements

Possession of a Class C California driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Failure to possess or maintain the required license may result in discipline up to termination.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Push/pull and lifting/carrying in various weight ranges from up to 10 lbs to 100+ lbs with varying frequency. Coordination: eye-hand, eye-hand-foot, driving are required.
