Position Description
The Material Handler / Expeditor is responsible for receiving, handling, storing, and distributing construction materials on-site or at the laydown yard, while ensuring timely delivery to meet project schedules. This role also includes tracking materials, expediting orders, coordinating with vendors, and maintaining accurate inventory records. The ideal candidate ensures materials are available when and where needed, minimizing project delays and disruptions.
Position Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Material Handling & Distribution
Receive, inspect, and verify incoming materials and equipment for quantity and quality. Stage and deliver materials to designated work areas in a safe and organized manner. Load, unload, and move materials using forklifts, cranes, or other equipment safely. Maintain clean, organized, and secure storage areas.
Expediting & Coordination
Monitor material orders and delivery schedules to ensure on-time receipt. Communicate proactively with vendors, subcontractors, and project teams regarding material status, delays, or shortages. Assist the Material Manager in expediting critical items to prevent work stoppages. Update project teams on material availability and coordinate staging plans.
Inventory Control & Documentation
Maintain accurate inventory records in ERP or inventory management software. Perform cycle counts and assist with regular inventory audits. Document material receipts, transfers, and usage in compliance with company procedures.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all safety protocols related to material handling and storage. Report damaged materials, safety hazards, or non-compliance issues immediately. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and enforce safety standards in the yard/worksite.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum 2-5 years of experience in industrial or heavy construction material handling or logistics. Knowledge of construction materials, equipment, and supply chain processes preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Skills for inventory tracking and reporting.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move materials up to [insert weight, e.g., 50 lbs]. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Prolonged standing, walking, climbing, and operation of material-handling equipment.
Working Conditions
Construction site and laydown yard environment with exposure to heavy equipment, noise, dust, and varying weather. May require overtime, shift work, and weekend availability to meet project deadlines.
