The energy industry, particularly transmission grids, is undergoing major changes to accommodate regional and global demand growth, decarbonization and energy transition targets. Underground and subsea cable technology are increasingly becoming a major player in this paradigm shift to enable large-scale and long-distance power transmission. As an HV Underground Transmission Engineer, you will work closely with regional and global transmission and cable experts within Jacobs to support and/or lead ongoing projects as well as business development and proposal support with clients including renewable developers, transmission owner/developers and utilities. The successful candidate shall demonstrate related experience and technical knowledge in underground transmission, cable engineering design and installation, with emphasis on high voltage applications (69kV and above). Knowledge of electrical design/studies, specifications, and/or FAT/SAT commissioning related to cable systems is preferred. This position will be opened for at least 3 days. Duties for this position include but are not limited to Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required. Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design. Prepare specifications, power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports. Confirm correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects. Attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors. Support factory inspections (FAT). Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, electromechanical and thermomechanical forces and EMF calculations, heat-induced voltage calculations. Perform design reviews and verification of design. Confirm that drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction; formally request any missing information in time to avoid delays. Confirm that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the specifications, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality. Collaborate with teams and support a hybrid working policy (split time between Jacobs offices/projects and remote locations). What you’ll need Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree is preferred. Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation. Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP. Knowledge of industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE. Experience working with major global cable OEMs. Ability and willingness to travel within North America. Ideally, you’ll also have Experience with HVDC and subsea cable technologies. Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) license or ability to obtain within 6 months. Active involvement in power cable related working groups and standards committees such as ICC or CIGRE. Some roles may be eligible for additional rewards, including merit increases, discretionary bonus, and stock. The base salary range for this position is $129,400.00 to $180,000.00. Within the range, pay is determined by work location and other factors including job-related skills, experience, and education or training.
