role at City of San José. Overview The City of San José – San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is recruiting for a Senior Airport Operations Specialist in the Airport Operations Division. This position supports the four sections of Airport Operations (Airside, Terminal Management / Customer Service, Landside, and Security) and rotates responsibilities to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the airport’s 24-hour operations. The role reports to an Airport Operations Supervisor and the Manager-on-Duty. Responsibilities
Airside Operations: respond to emergencies and incidents, conduct airfield inspections, coordinate cleanup efforts, and patrol the airfield to ensure regulatory compliance.
Terminal Management / Customer Service: coordinate shared resources (gates, remote parking, counters, baggage systems), document and resolve disruptions, conduct terminal inspections, and perform customer service surveys.
Landside Services: process permits, reports and work orders, observe and enforce activities on Landside facilities, respond to emergencies and incidents to maintain safe operations.
Security Compliance: perform surveillance, investigations, enforce access control procedures, and respond to security-related issues.
Airport Operations Center: monitor CCTV and critical systems, coordinate responses, manage radio communications, perform passenger paging and internal communications.
Maintain familiarity with computer programs used in Airport Operations (Access Control, Gate/Resource Management, IPTV) and manage multiple lines of communication; perform general clerical duties as needed.
Provide excellent customer service to the traveling public and business stakeholders, and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
Qualifications Education and Experience Senior Airport Operations Specialist I: Bachelor’s degree in aviation or a closely related field AND one (1) year of aviation experience (internships qualify). Additional aviation experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis. Senior Airport Operations Specialist II: Bachelor’s degree in aviation or related field AND certification from an airport industry professional organization AND one (1) year of experience at the level of Senior Airport Operations Specialist I. Additional aviation experience may substitute for the degree requirement. Senior Airport Operations Specialist III: Bachelor’s degree in aviation or related field AND certification from an airport industry professional organization AND two (2) years of experience at the level of Senior Airport Operations Specialist I or higher. Additional aviation experience may substitute for the degree requirement. Licensing and Other Qualifications
Must complete and pass a TSA-mandated background check and other requirements.
California Driver’s License.
Obtain an Airport Ramp Driver and Movement Area Operating Permit within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Job knowledge of aviation operations, regulations, and airport security practices.
Strong communication, leadership, and customer service skills.
Computer proficiency with MS Office and airport-specific systems; ability to coordinate across multiple teams.
