Job Summary PetSmart’s Process Leader (Retail Operations Manager) has shared responsibility to drive operational excellence in our stores while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. This role is accountable for merchandising and inventory management, pet care operations, opening and/or closing the store, leading associates, financial outcomes and maintaining a safe and organized environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, and may vary depending on store characteristics and needs:
People Leadership:
Participates in employment decisions such as recruiting, interviewing, and coaching. Facilitates the associate experience and supports associate development; including training, onboarding, reviews, labor management, mentoring, succession planning, and coaching for accountability. Addresses associate complaints and grievances. Prioritizes, delegates, and validates daily tasks. Leads and coaches associates on operational processes to ensure pets in our care are safe and healthy. Coordinates staffing coverage for key areas of the store. Validates completion of operational messages and engagement video compliance. Communicates company information and priorities to ensure alignment. Recognizes and celebrates associates driving engagement.
Overall Store Experience:
Accountable for and oversight of the healthcare of store-owned pets, including pet care maintenance, receiving new store-owned pets, feeding/watering/cleaning standards for habitats, and care for sick store-owned pets. Manages inventory management and pricing processes, including accuracy, receiving, stocking, counts, product rotations, and planner/planogram sets. Evaluates operations for continuous improvement. Maintains vendor relationships, backroom standards, and communication boards. Oversees Buy Online and Pick Up In Store and Ship From Store programs. Identifies sales trends through analysis and merchandising activities. Makes sound merchandising decisions for discretionary space and discontinued merchandise. Maintains store standards and leads a culture of empowerment with policy and code compliance. Ensures a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents. Takes action and reports when a sick/injured pet is identified. Shares responsibility with store opening/closing procedures and addresses pet parent concerns.
Expense Management:
Drives growth and holds associates accountable for store P&L targets. Analyzes inventory reports to identify trends and root causes. Manages expenses such as labor and supplies. Coordinates with Home Office partners to submit and follow up on store-related work orders and purchase card allocations.
QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of retail leadership or experience in a customer-focused environment.
Full-time availability with flexibility in schedule; able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in maintaining a visually appealing store layout.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Typically oversees up to three lead associates and up to forty non-leader associates. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with PetSmart’s policies and procedures.
Responsible for employment decisions and associate development.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standing, walking, climbing, handling, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking, and hearing. Depth perception required. Reasonable accommodations available.
Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional team lifts over 100 pounds. Depth perception required.
Exposed to moving mechanical parts, pet hair, moderate noise; exposure to live animals is common.
