Working under the day-to-day supervision of pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications. This includes, but is not limited to: receiving, distribution, management of expiration dates, inventory management in Pyxis, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The role requires excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the supervision of:
Ordering/Receiving
Assists with receiving orders from wholesalers Properly inventories and stickers delivery to ensure all items are received Confirms that each medication is scannable, involving a pharmacist when appropriate Helps maintain proper stock levels of drugs, supplies, and solutions by informing in writing when items are low Repackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when necessary Performs calculations for dosing, unit conversions, and admixture volumes Prepares clean room and sterile products area for daily use Follows clean room policies and procedures Prepares low and medium risk sterile and non-sterile compounds Complies with universal precautions and uses aseptic technique when compounding Inventory Management
Checks expiration dates in and outside the department Credits and debits patients in Meditech if medications are reordered or returned Resolves missing medication issues Performs monthly floor inspections to ensure medication integrity on units and in patient care areas Ensures all medications are properly labeled Properly disposes of medications, hazardous substances, sharps Identifies and returns expired medications eligible for credit Assists in semi-annual inventory activities as needed Fills Medication Orders
Receives labels and orders, accurately selecting the proper drug, dosage form, and strength Retrieves medications from ADC fill list accurately Organizes filled medications neatly for checking Retrieves medications at the window as requested Refills trays and kits, including code trays, STEMI kits, anaphylaxis kits, and tackle boxes for pharmacist checking Fills OR machines accurately using scanners when required Delivers Medication
Performs routine rounds to patient care areas in a timely manner Delivers medications to proper locations, including ADCs, medication rooms, or directly to nurses Updates machines with current dates for drugs Outdates medications in ADCs at each delivery Returns medications from floors as needed Fills Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC)
Understands the process of loading and unloading Fills ADCs accurately with scanner use when required Loads medications neatly without overfilling pockets Troubleshoots minor equipment issues with ADCs Reboots equipment as needed Communication
Uses excellent customer service skills to resolve issues Answers phones and triages calls requiring a pharmacist Communicates effectively with nursing and other staff outside the pharmacy department Professionalism
Maintains professionalism within and outside the department Builds and maintains excellent working relationships Dresses professionally Keeps a neat, clean, and organized work area Represents the pharmacy department when interacting outside it Complies with HIPAA policies Supports training of new staff Manages time effectively and prioritizes tasks Maintains Logs
Accurately documents logs daily, including refrigerator and hood cleaning, eye wash Reports omissions or errors Handles Controlled Substances
Maintains excellent record keeping and accuracy when dealing with controlled substances Immediately reports concerns or discrepancies REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
