About the Morris Heights Health Center
For more than 40 years, Morris Heights Health Center (MHHC) has stood as a trusted lifeline for the Bronx & Brooklyn, one of the most underserved communities in the nation. Founded in 1981, MHHC has grown into a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and a nationally recognized model of community-based care, with a mission to be the vanguard for quality, affordable, and accessible health care for all.
What began as a single site has evolved into a network of 30 locations across the Bronx and Brooklyn, including nine community health centers, 20 school-based health centers, and specialized service sites that anchor MHHC’s reach. With an annual operating budget of $87 million and a workforce of more than 600 employees, MHHC now serves over 50,000 patients annually, providing care through more than 139,000 visits.
MHHC’s work is rooted in the belief that health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of complete physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. As such, the organization has become a true health home, addressing not only medical needs but also the root causes of illness, from food insecurity to housing instability. Patients have access to a sweeping array of services, including adult and family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, and preventive screenings - alongside an extensive range of specialty care such as cardiology, dentistry, optometry, gastroenterology, podiatry, radiology, and urgent care. Behavioral health services encompass individual, family, and group therapy, psychiatry, and substance use treatment. Maternal and child health are supported through midwifery, doula services, WIC programs, and the Maternal Health & Hope Coalition.
MHHC is equally committed to programs that strengthen the social fabric of health. The Age Well program supports more than 4,000 older adults annually with geriatric, dental, mental health, and specialty care, combined with social supports and no-cost dentures for uninsured patients. The Young Adult and Adolescent Health Unit provides trauma-informed and gender-affirming care for youth, while Achieving Diabetes Excellence delivers comprehensive support for patients with high-risk or uncontrolled diabetes. Initiatives such as Eat Well, which provides fresh food access and nutrition education for 3,000 families each year, and Read Well, which distributes bilingual books and early literacy resources to more than 1,700 children, exemplify MHHC’s whole-person approach. Senior housing and support programs further underscore MHHC’s commitment to enabling patients to live healthier, fuller lives within their communities.
Accredited by the Joint Commission and recognized as a Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, MHHC continues to innovate. Its boldest step forward is BeWell@MHHC, a 62,000-square-foot health and wellness hub opening in 2028. This state-of-the-art facility will integrate high-quality clinical services with nonclinical supports such as nutrition, wellness, education, and economic stability under one roof, reimagining how community health is delivered in the Bronx.
As the driving force behind MHHC, President and CEO Ms. Mari G. Millet has built a legacy of visionary leadership rooted in both kindness and courageous innovation. With over 40 years of experience in community healthcare, acute and ambulatory care, she has transformed operations across multiple health centers- expanding access to high-quality care, creating urgent care, dental, and vision facilities, and elevating preventive and wellness initiatives. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: to serve every dimension of wellbeing- physical, social, emotional- for those who too often have no voice. Under her leadership, MHHC is not just a care provider but a beacon for changemakers, inviting bold thinkers and committed souls to join her in shaping a healthier, more equitable Bronx & Brooklyn.
Through it all, MHHC has remained steadfast in its belief that everyone deserves access to high-quality, compassionate care—regardless of income, background, or circumstance. For four decades, the organization has not only treated illness but fostered resilience, advanced equity, and built healthier communities.
