Riverdale Country School, a Pre-K through Grade 12 independent all-gender school in New York City, is seeking a Production Cook. The base pay range is $22.00/hr - $26.00/hr. Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of meals in the kitchen under the guidance and direction of the Executive Sous Chef and the management team.
  • Perform routine kitchen tasks such as setting up workstations and ingredients so that food can be prepared according to recipes.
  • Demonstrate thorough experience with hot and cold food preparation.
  • Comply with all state food handling laws and regulations, and follow the schools policies and procedures.
  • Work as a team member, assist co-workers with varying levels of food preparation and service, and be willing to flex or extend the work schedule for the schools events.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through conduct, punctuality, and minimal absences; promote professional growth and development.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relations with building staff, administrators, students, and parents; communicate effectively with them.
  • Ensure proper storage, temperature control, and food safety standards are followed; maintain a clean and sanitary workstation, equipment, and utensils.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely (e.g., choppers, slicers, ovens, steamers, knives) and assist in maintaining production records (food usage, overages, shortages, and guest counts).
  • Assist with ordering and inventory for upcoming production and report safety hazards to management.
  • Provide excellent customer service and collaborate with the Riverdale community and management team.
  • Communicate allergens and food knowledge to guests as appropriate.
  • Receive deliveries and store items properly; understand diet-restricted meal components and related production and service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Types of Machines, Tools, and Equipment

  • Basic cooking utensils and equipment such as pots, pans, dishware, silverware, glassware, knives, ovens, grills/stoves, microwaves, steam kettles, and related tools.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand for long periods, bend, kneel, reach, and lift/carry/push up to 40 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Occasional exposure to cold, heat, and water.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in a professional kitchen environment.
  • Proficient with a French knife and commercial cooking equipment.
  • High School Diploma.
  • ServSafe Certification - preferred. NYC DOH Food Protection Certificate - willing to maintain a current certification.

  • Executive Sous Chef, Assistant Director of Food Service, Students, Faculty and Staff

Term of Employment

  • Monday-Friday 6:30 am - 2:30 pm; some evenings and weekends required, subject to change with notice. 10-month full-time position; side work possible when available during summer months.
