Position Overview
The Obstetrical Technician provides basic nursing care (personal and restorative care) and functions as a member of the surgical team by assisting and passing instruments during surgical procedures performed in the Labor and Delivery unit. He/She understands the procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The OB Technician ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. He/She assists in the preparation of the room before surgery or delivery and is accountable for all items required for their surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures. The Obstetrical Technician performs routine clerical duties as needed within the unit. The Obstetrical Technician performs duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Requirements
- Education: High School graduate or equivalent required. Successful completion of Surgical Technician program preferred.
- License: N/A
- Certification: Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred. Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer. Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days).
- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
- Reports To: Registered Nurse responsible for patient care management during scheduled shift as well as the Patient Care Manager on a 24 hours basis.

- Physical Demands: Work is moderately active and involves lifting, moving, and exposure to body fluids. Includes repetitive motions and long periods of standing. Requires close visual acuity and ability to adjust focus.
- Mental Demands: Strong assessment, decision-making, communication skills; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; attention to detail and multi-tasking.
- Special Demands: Superior customer service, proficient computer skills (MS Outlook and Word), and willingness to travel within the SRHS service area using own transportation.
