The Director of Institutional Research leads the institutional research function for Stanford University, exercising analytical leadership over research studies on the university’s performance, creation of dashboards and decision support tools, and reporting of core institutional metrics. The Director oversees reporting to governmental agencies and external bodies, collaborates on data definitions and appropriate use, and provides information and insight to university constituencies including Board of Trustees, executive leadership, faculty, students, and staff. The Director manages six institutional research analysts and reports to the Associate Vice Provost and Director of IR&DS. Responsibilities

Proactively identify issues with the most value to the university and determine methodologies for collecting and analyzing data from multiple sources. Create multi-year strategic plans to ensure access to data and findings for decision support and program evaluation. Advise senior management on programmatic and policy development; provide input to university leadership on policies and organizational practices. Advise and consult on analytical efforts outside of the organization, including for other university units and peer consortia. Drive collection of new data and refinement of existing data sources; ensure reliable and consistent data for ad hoc and longitudinal inquiries. Create research designs and analytical plans; use statistical or other techniques to analyze data. Develop communication plans to present findings in audience-appropriate formats. Create quality assurance plans to ensure findings are accurate. Interact with and influence senior university leaders, faculty, and/or the faculty senate with written summaries and/or presentations. Collaborate with other organizations to gather data; seek outside benchmarks or comparative data to support or refute proposed decisions. Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve the group’s goals; hire, retain, coach, and develop direct reports. Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience. Prefer advanced degree with seven years of extensive relevant experience; knowledge of data science, statistics, education research, or social science research. Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, planning, and change management skills; advanced analytical and research skills. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to perform desk-based computer tasks; strong communication and facilitation skills; ability to influence, problem-solve, and manage projects within time constraints. Facility with manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume data; experience with empirical research and answering hard questions with data. Proficiency with SQL, R, or similar data retrieval/manipulation tools; ability to use data visualization tools such as Tableau; proficiency with statistical tools (SPSS, Stata, R or similar). Subject matter expertise in higher education research, student analytics, or university planning; knowledge of university administrative organization, policies, and procedures for institutional research roles. Working Conditions

Flexible analytical approach; ability to craft multiple options with supporting arguments for varying levels of precision. Excellent oral and written communication; ability to influence, troubleshoot, and resolve conflicts. Ability to work extended hours during peak periods; may require on-site presence.
