Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Collections Manager works with the Repatriation Coordinator to develop a strategic plan for the UCSB Repository collections, with emphasis on curation, collection management, and database maintenance.
Oversees care, organization, and documentation of the collection; ensures high standards of curation and preservation. Supervises, evaluates, and assesses the overall quality of the curation of the Repository collections.
Assists in consultation with Tribes. Works with the repatriation team to achieve repatriation goals in a timely manner.
Completes work in accordance with best museum ethics and practices. Accepts projects from the Repatriation Coordinator as prioritized with project balance. Discusses project goals and resource allocation with supervisor regularly.
With expertise in museum curation, uses advanced subject knowledge and curatorial skills to resolve complex issues, recommend conservation strategies, and ensure the collections' integrity. Exercises judgment in selecting methods for obtaining results. Work is performed independently with a high degree of autonomy. Maintains close partnerships with indigenous community stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Archaeology, Museum Studies, or American Indian/ Indigenous Studies or related field(s)
Master's Degree in Archaeology, Museum Studies, or American Indian/ Indigenous Studies or related field(s)
4–6 years experience in curatorial work
1–3 years archaeological field work experience
1–3 years working knowledge of museum related regulations, especially the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
1–3 years skill/experience in museum object handling
Demonstrated experience with museum databases and cataloging
Demonstrated experience with collections management and archiving
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of California material culture. Demonstrated experience working with indigenous communities
Ability to oversee volunteers and staff on selected work assignments, and, in the supervisor's absence, to schedule previously determined work assignments to staff and volunteers
Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a production environment; ability to manage many projects simultaneously
Ability to set, organize and prioritize multiple tasks
Ability to collaborate with staff, members of the community, and colleagues at every level
Proficient in MS Word and Excel; ability to manage accession records in digital forms
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly, productively, cooperatively, diplomatically, and respectfully
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
Special Conditions Of Employment
This is a career position with an expected end date of 2 years from the date of hire.
