The Psychiatrist performs advanced psychiatric assessment work and reports to the SSLC Medical Director. The role involves conducting psychiatric activities, diagnosing and treating residents, and guiding a multidisciplinary approach to resident care within state-supported living centers serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral issues. Responsibilities
Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team activities; provide consultation and training to behavioral health and direct care staff. Lead or participate in committees to establish guidelines and standards of care in response to regulatory changes. Plan, assign, and guide work in the multidisciplinary approach to resident care; may supervise others depending on facility structure. Perform psychiatric assessments, determine treatments, and manage medications within SSLC policies and IDT agreements. Establish physician-patient relationships within required timeframes and conduct regular psychiatric clinics, emergency clinics, and follow-ups. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, ensuring least-restrictive interventions based on risk-benefit analysis. Coordinate with neurology for dually diagnosed individuals; ensure notes reflect collaboration. Collaborate with other psychiatrists, medical staff, and psychologists to develop behavioral interventions and participate in restraint reduction efforts when needed. Manage acute psychiatric care, including emergency restraints and coordination of hospitalizations as a last resort. Review system data to monitor quality of psychiatric care and implement improvements with the IDT. Maintain open communication with leadership and participate in relevant committees to ensure continuity of services. Participate in mandatory training and comply with HIPAA, ICF-IID standards, and settlement agreements to provide quality care. May manage staff within the psychiatric department and participate in disaster response or COOP activation as required. Qualifications
Must be licensed (unrestricted) as a medical doctor by the State of Texas and Board Certified or Board eligible in Psychiatry in Texas. Must have current unrestricted DEA registration and possess an NPI; enroll as a Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider. Residency trained; at least three years of psychiatry experience preferred; experience with mental illness and intellectual disabilities preferred. Knowledge of general medicine/psychiatry, treatment plan development, state formulary guidelines, and electronic health records. Ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients; direct psychiatric activities; collaborate with IDT and related staff; manage polypharmacy as needed. Strong communication skills to present information effectively in writing and orally; ability to work independently with good judgment and time management. CPR, safe use of restraints, and related training; willingness to participate in annual and required trainings. Must pass background checks, pre-employment drug screening, and other due diligence checks; TMV/LEIE considerations apply. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of general medicine and psychiatry; ability to develop individualized care plans; collaborate with behavioral health staff. Knowledge of state formulary guidelines; ability to document exceptions when needed. Experience with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a large residential setting; proficiency with electronic health systems and Microsoft Office. Ability to work with IDT, conduct medication reviews, and participate in multidisciplinary care planning. Ability to supervise, plan, and assign work; work independently; participate in quality improvement and state initiatives. Additional Information
