Responsibilities
- Greet patients, answer phones, register and check in visits.
- Recognize and resolve questionable orders and patient identification.
- Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, culture collection, and arterial blood gases according to the specimen/collection manual.
- Collect specimens within the scope of training and ensure sample type, volume and equipment are appropriate.
- Interpret collection lists/requisitions and identify patients using proper technique.
- Train and orient new phlebotomists or employees in computer entry, venipuncture, capillary puncture and throat culture collection.
- Maintain adequate supplies and stocked work areas; respond to STAT and out-patient alerts promptly.
- Perform clerical duties such as filing, retrieving, faxing and copying written reports.
- Operate office equipment and follow Universal Precautions and Safety standards.
- Demonstrate competency in designated lab sections and update knowledge through educational opportunities.
- Organize and prioritize workload to avoid delays for patients, testing and reporting results.
- Assist in lab ordering and inventory maintenance; address add-on testing requests and billing inquiries appropriately.
- Interact professionally with coworkers, medical staff, patients and hospital personnel; maintain a clean, well-kept work area.
- Operate independently with minimal direction and supervision; perform duties as needed beyond explicit assignments.
- Follow guidelines for missed collections, recollects and difficult phlebotomies; prepare samples for reference lab testing.
- Distribute lab result reports to the appropriate providers.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Graduate from a Phlebotomy Technician Program.
