Overview

Security Guard position with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Juvenile Justice. These are temporary full-time positions located in our YDC/JDC facilities in the Eastern, Central, Piedmont and Western Regions. Positions provide protective, security and public contact work in the operation of a State facility and are filled through Temporary Solutions.

Description Of Work

We are looking for candidates who have a passion for helping at-risk youth. The job involves providing physical security through patrols of the interior and exterior of facilities, monitoring for violations of laws and regulations, and reporting unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities. Successful candidates will be hired through Temporary Solutions and will work under the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Juvenile Justice.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety of the public, staff, students, and others by enforcing rules of conduct.
  • Monitoring access to areas; controlling traffic of people and vehicles to prevent overcrowding, traffic or parking congestion, and other hazardous incidents.
  • Providing general information to the public regarding exhibits, programs, special activities and/or directions.
  • Checking location and use of emergency alarms and equipment; following emergency procedures and maintaining daily records and reports.
  • Using security equipment (radios, phones, flashlights, cameras, alarm panels, card access, etc.).
  • Patrolling, monitoring, and guarding assigned areas; responding quickly and properly in emergencies.
  • Interacting with coworkers, supervisors, and the public to provide assistance and relay information.
  • Following oral and written instructions and performing related duties as required.
  • Working within established rules and receiving assignments from a supervisor.

Work Schedule

Work hours vary by facility. Candidates must be able to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and be able to work a variable schedule to meet the needs of juveniles and their families.

The Juvenile Justice Section is committed to reducing juvenile delinquency by intervening, educating, and treating youth to strengthen families and increase public safety.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And Abilities)

The following are required or commonly expected for this position:

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of standard security practices and reporting emergencies.
  • Ability to operate standard security equipment and to patrol, monitor, and guard assigned areas.
  • Ability to respond quickly and properly in emergency situations and to follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Education And Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears, you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
