Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator/Nurse Manager, observes, assesses, plans, intervenes and evaluates outcomes and documents all aspects of patient care.
  • Provide primary proactive management for the service area during the assigned shift with supervisory guidance; supervise, counsel, and evaluate other nursing staff.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Coordinator, other Nurse Managers, and MH Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24-hour continuity of care; assume duties of the Nurse Coordinator during absence.
  • Provide direct nursing care to individual patients as needed and participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
  • Coordinate scheduling within assigned areas and adapt duties as determined by administration to meet hospital needs.
  • Ensure treatment is aligned with nursing standards and hospital policies; disseminate information to unit nursing staff.
  • Teach patients and families about medications, illness, and treatments using appropriate methods for various ages and cognitive levels.
  • Implement precautions, document rights restrictions, and apply restraint/seclusion procedures per policy to maintain patient safety.
  • Participate in abuse/neglect processes, safety monitoring, and Performance Improvement activities; coordinate effective utilization of nursing staff on assigned units.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and ongoing in-service programs relevant to patient population and care needs.
  • Assist with disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activations as needed, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of ANA Nursing Standards; knowledge of departmental policies and procedures; knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act; supervisory and management skills; CPR and emergency care skills; ability to interact positively with patients, staff, families, and the public; ability to remain calm in crisis; effective communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications: Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas (or state recognizing reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact).
  • Initial Screening Criteria: Graduation from an accredited Nursing Program; at least 6 months of experience as a practicing RN; 6 months of RN experience in a health agency, hospital, or health-care facility preferred; Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).

  • Flexibility in work hours; overtime and/or extended hours may be required.
