ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, FINANCE

City of Miami The Assistant Director of Finance assists with managing the City’s financial operations including accounting, financial reporting, treasury (investments & debt), accounts receivable, cash receipts, customer service, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, capital assets, and projects & grants. Nature of Work : This is an executive level position which reports to the Department Director or designee. The position also supports the administrative, managerial, and operational aspects of the Finance Department. Additionally, this role serves as a champion of financial innovation, driving continuous improvement in the department’s staff, processes, and systems to align with best practices and achieve service excellence. Essential Functions : Duties include, but are not limited to: Assisting the Director in formulating, implementing, and managing the City’s finance operations. Contributing to the development of policies and procedures affecting the entire department or specific divisions. Assisting with coordinating and reviewing key financial reports. Preparing reports on the City’s fiscal activities. Assisting in preparing and monitoring the department’s budget. Representing the Director in meetings and on committees. Serving as a liaison between the Finance Department and auditors, fiscal agencies, the public, and other City departments. Responding to external and internal audit report findings and overseeing implementation of corrective action plans. Assisting with planning, evaluating, and implementing financial system upgrades and new technologies. Promoting process innovation using lean methodology and continuous improvement strategies. Developing and monitoring key performance indicators and metrics to evaluate departmental strengths and weaknesses. Managing departmental personnel matters. Preparing and delivering reports, briefings, presentations, and training to boards, committees, City departments, stakeholders, and Finance staff. Leading interdepartmental working groups. Performing other related duties and completing special projects, as needed. Minimum Requirements : Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or Public Administration or related field and seven (7) years professional level supervisory accounting, auditing, or finance experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA); Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO); or Certified Government Finance Manager (CGFM), or equivalent licenses/certifications are preferred.
