Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA) serves and supports the academic needs of UNC student-athletes throughout their collegiate experience as they pursue their educational goals and prepare for the next stage of their lives. The ASPSA reports directly to the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and collaborates with faculty, the Department of Athletics, and the campus community to support student-athletes as they excel in the classroom and compete in athletics. The ASPSA staff includes academic counselors, learning specialists, and tutors. Services include tutoring, secondary academic and career advising, assistance with University and NCAA eligibility, and coordination of academic honors and awards. The ASPSA supports students from recruitment through graduation and beyond, with a focus on academic coaching, eligibility education, course/major planning, and collaboration with campus partners to guide students on career planning. Tutors conduct sessions in various formats, and the ASPSA maintains integrity and compliance with NCAA, ACC, and University policies. The ASPSA is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and inclusive learning environments for Carolina’s Tar Heel student-athletes. Position Summary
The Associate Director is a member of the ASPSA professional staff under the supervision of the Director. The role coordinates and/or supervises programming, oversees assigned academic counselors, and contributes to the management of the academic center. It also serves as the academic counselor for assigned teams and provides all functions of an academic counselor, including regular meetings to monitor progress, reporting to coaches, and assisting with APR and GSR preparation. The Associate Director participates in recruiting activities, orientation, and evening structured study programs. The position requires adherence to NCAA, ACC, and University policies and procedures and supports an inclusive learning environment for student-athletes. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates with comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to student advising and counseling or student personnel services, a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience may be substituted. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience. Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with staff and colleagues. Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student retention and familiarity with issues related to student-athletes’ academic progress and transition issues. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong skills in working with details and logistics. Nightly and weekend work required, all year round. Travel required. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience working with student-athletes or college students. Working knowledge of NCAA policies, eligibility, and NCAA APR and GSR submission. Experience working with diverse student populations and at-risk students. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The role requires reporting Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and completing annual training on reporting responsibilities.
