The Controller is responsible for the accuracy of the firm’s financial statements and manages Accounting and Payroll professionals. The Controller works closely with the General Counsel’s office to protect the firm’s interests and reduce the risk of fraud. The Controller is a senior member of the Finance team and assists the Chief Financial Officer with overall firm financial leadership. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and directly supervises the Assistant Controller and the Manager, Payroll and Partner Compensation. Location: Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Melville, NY; New York City, NY; Providence, RI; Rochester, NY; Washington, DC
Responsibilities
General Accounting and Financial Operations : Manage core financial functions including General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Partner Compensation, Payroll, and Payroll Compliance. Develop and enforce the firm’s finance policies. Forecast daily cashflow to minimize firm debt.
Lead monthly, calendar year, and fiscal year-end closing processes with scenario modeling and risk communication to the CFO.
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management : Manage domestic and international audits, oversee banking relationships and client trust accounts, assist attorneys on client trust account controls, and collaborate with Tax on tax implications and compliance. Develop procedures to reduce fraud risk and stay current with industry trends.
Budgeting, Analysis, and Expenditure Oversight : Manage the Controller group’s budget (depreciation, amortization, bank fees, etc.), participate in budget planning, and prepare partner compensation analyses and changes to the partner compensation model. Approve large expenditures.
Strategic Leadership and Process Improvement : Address complex issues such as fraud investigations and potential mergers, drive process improvements, and stay updated on market, regulatory, and business trends.
Team Leadership and Culture : Lead engagement programs, foster a client-focused culture, and collaborate to improve finance department satisfaction and professional excellence.
Additional Leadership Roles : Serve as Treasurer of Nixon Peabody Trust Company and as Chief Officer for Finance and Administration (COFA) for Nixon Peabody International. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years in a financial leadership role.
Law or professional services experience is a plus.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA and/or CPA preferred.
Thorough knowledge of accounting principles with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Strong management and employee development skills and strategic thought leadership.
Strong computer proficiency, including advanced Excel skills.
