Overview

The Controller is responsible for the accuracy of the firm’s financial statements. This position manages Accounting and Payroll professionals. The Controller works with the General Counsel’s office to protect the firm’s interests, ensure compliance, and reduce the risk of fraud. The Controller is a senior member of the Finance team and assists the Chief Financial Officer with overall firm financial leadership. A hybrid work schedule is available. Location:

Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Melville, NY; New York City, NY; Providence, RI; Rochester, NY; Washington, DC Responsibilities

General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Partner Compensation, Payroll, and Payroll Compliance management. Development, implementation, and compliance with the firm’s finance policies. Forecasting daily cash flow and minimizing firm debt. Leading monthly, calendar year-end, and fiscal year-end closing processes, including scenario modeling and risk communication to the CFO. Managing domestic and international audits, auditor selection, and partnership. Overseeing banking relationships for multiple firm and client trust accounts, including international accounts. Collaborating with the Tax department to ensure tax implications and compliance are considered in financial activities. Developing procedures, communications, and education programs to reduce financial fraud risk and implementing controls. Managing the Controller group’s budget, depreciation, amortization, and related expenses. Participating in budget planning, attending annual and quarterly budget meetings, and evaluating departmental budgets and expenditures. Preparing partner compensation analyses and contributing to the partner compensation model. Approving large firm expenditures as a key approver. Leading strategic initiatives, process improvements, and best practices in accounting, payroll, procurement, and tax operations. Managing complex issues such as fraud investigations and potential mergers, with recommendations and action plans. Leading a team culture focused on engagement, client service, and professional excellence. Serving in leadership roles such as Treasurer of Nixon Peabody Trust Company and COFA for Nixon Peabody International; performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years in a financial leadership role. Law or professional services experience is a plus. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA and/or CPA preferred. Thorough knowledge of accounting principles. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong management and employee development skills; strategic thought leadership. Strong computer proficiency with advanced Excel skills. Salary and Benefits
