Overview

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. The employee is responsible for a daily routine of custodial tasks that provide a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place for school personnel, students, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner, representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Uses electrical cleaning equipment in the cleaning of the assigned facility during hours assigned (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high speed buffers).
  • Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and regulatory guidelines to ensure safety for all.
  • Ensures assigned areas are opened daily and fully secured upon completion of daily tasks (e.g., locking doors and windows, turning off electrical units).
  • Performs custodial tasks (e.g., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls).
  • Performs sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchens, and cafeterias and other facility areas as needed.
  • Performs physically demanding tasks requiring heavy custodial equipment (e.g., mopping, stripping, waxing, floor buffing).
  • Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions (e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks).
  • Moves furniture and other equipment as part of duties.
  • Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to the immediate supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum cleaner belts/bags, changing pads).
  • Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance (e.g., changing light bulbs, refilling paper and soap dispensers, assisting in setup for meetings).
  • Functions independently or as part of a custodial crew depending on the task (e.g., seasonal facility preparations or major custodial projects).
  • Keeps up to date on current technology used by OCPS and attends training as needed to perform in the role.
  • Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by experience operating standard facility custodial equipment and meeting physical requirements, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Data Utilization: Ability to arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and information; evaluate characteristics against standards.
  • Human Interaction: Ability to exchange information within established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Ability to operate custodial equipment and cleaning tools.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to use reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.
  • Functional Reasoning: Ability to follow instructions and perform semi-routine work with some independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment and creativity in changing situations with predefined duties.

ADA Compliance

  • Physical Ability: Ability to exert heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting 20-50 pounds (up to 100 pounds occasionally).
  • Sensory Requirements: May require odor perception, depth perception, and visual discrimination.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to odors, fumes, dusts, moisture, machinery, noise, and other conditions typical of custodial work.
