Assistant/Associate Professor of Wildland Urban Interface Fire Science – full-time academic year, tenure-track position in the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Location: Central California, San Luis Obispo. Begin date: January 5, 2026 or August 17, 2026. The appointment is tenure-track at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with salary grade commensurate with education and experience. Responsibilities

Teach courses in support of the undergraduate Forest & Fire Sciences major, including wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire protection, wildland fire behavior, and wildland fire control. Develop new courses to enhance curriculum related to fire management in WUI systems; bridge teaching and scholarship. Engage in scholarship in the fire science, WUI area, and establish an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduate and graduate students. Collaborate with fire management agencies, forest industry, and other stakeholders to advance teaching and scholarship. Participate in department, college, and university initiatives related to WUI fire topics and student success. Qualifications

Required:

Doctorate degree focused on fire sciences, wildfire modeling, or related field by start date (ABD considered with evidence that the doctorate will be awarded prior to appointment); record of publications in peer-reviewed venues; demonstrated excellence in teaching and communication; ability to develop externally funded, applied research with student involvement; strong written and oral English skills; ability to work in multidisciplinary settings as well as with diverse populations. Preferred:

Proven track record in teaching and research; ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students; experience collaborating with forest industry, fire managers, state agencies, and NGOs; commitment to inclusive, diverse learning environments. Appointment and Salary

Grade and salary commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated hiring ranges: Assistant Professor: $90,948 - $105,156; Associate Professor: $105,492 - $114,720. Equal Opportunity

The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. It supports approximately 750 undergraduate and 30 graduate students with 20 tenured/tenure-track faculty. Resources include on-campus field facilities, Swanton Pacific Ranch, and collaboration across campus on interdisciplinary initiatives related to WUI and environmental sciences. How to Apply
