Animal Control Attendant I

Knowledge of: General knowledge of animal care. Basic knowledge of animal diseases and behavior and proper and safe handling of animals. General knowledge of city streets. Pertinent State and local laws, codes, and regulations related to Animal Control. Modern office procedures, methods and equipment's, including computers, and standard office software. Principles of record keeping and report preparation. Effective written communication including proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Ability to:

Respond to difficult and sensitive requests and inquiries. Operate a variety of computer equipment including a computer and standard office software. Maintain accurate records. Determine disposition of unwanted or non-adoptable animals. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Use a restraint pole, leash, rope, and humane traps. Handle and physically restraint animals. Assist with loading livestock in a trailer. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time operating assigned equipment and vehicles Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination perception needed for:

making observations communicating with others reading and writing operating assigned equipment and vehicles answering questions speaking in a clear and audible voice

Maintain mental capacity which permits:

making sound decisions and using good judgment communicating clearly responding to questions

Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve: working closely with others office work working with the public working under harsh weather conditions Ability to get along with other employees, ability to follow directions, and ability to work effectively under stress.

Experience:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying

High school graduate or GED required.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid Texas driver's license.

Possession of or ability to obtain with 120 days, an appropriate, valid Euthanasia Technician Certificate.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, and exposure to inclement weather conditions and potentially hostile situations.

Potential to be exposed to dangerous and/or rabid animals, and possibly some other zoonotic diseases such as ringworm, mange, hookworms, etc.

Frequent exposure to vicious animals

Frequent exposure to wild or exotic animals.

Handling of hazardous materials.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; general manual dexterity; requires operating motorized vehicles.

Lift weight simulating animals (80 pounds) to waist height.

Lift 50 pound sack of food.

Lift/carry 80 pounds occasionally (less than 30% of the time or 1-100 times per day).

Lift/carry 25 pounds frequently (34%-66% of the time or 100-500 times per day).

Lift/carry 10 pounds constantly (67%-100% of the time or over 500 times per day).

Position requires pushing a maximum force of 22 pounds.

Position requires pulling a maximum force of 22 pounds.
