Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Security Guard I - Part Time - Security - Part-Time - 4PM-12AM, Varied Days Off. In this role, the successful candidate patrols hospital buildings and grounds, holds post on an assigned shift protecting patients, visitors, volunteers, employees, and property. Responds to hospital emergencies and provides staff support on access control and special activities as required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Greets patients, visitors, and employees and responds to inquiries in a courteous and prompt manner. Identifies self by name clearly and concisely, if requested. Provides directions to visitors as needed. Refers matters outside the scope of own duties to appropriate personnel, keeping patients and others informed as needed.
  • Protects and safeguards hospital properties and installations as assigned. Patrols surrounding areas to ensure orderliness; opens/closes doors, secures restricted areas, checks fire hoses, stairwells, etc., in accordance with procedure. Operates and monitors security systems (alarms, CCTV, access control, digital recording, etc.). Maintains identification card system and distribution process, updating employee access levels. Provides security escorts as directed.
  • Observes visitors, answers questions, and investigates losses or suspicious situations in a courteous, efficient manner. Escorts unruly or unauthorized personnel from hospital premises tactfully. May require restraining skills. Prepares and submits incident reports to supervisor.
  • Explains hospital security policies and procedures to visitors and staff. Assists other departments in controlling visitor traffic as required. Maintains hospital package control policy in accordance with established procedure.
  • Responds promptly to fire alarms and other emergencies using established communication systems and procedures. Unlocks doors and directs affected populations to safe areas; assists fire personnel as needed.
  • Detains law violators and represents the hospital in legal cases as necessary. May be required to testify as a complainant for the hospital on related cases. Prepares appropriate legal documents as needed. Directs traffic, guards celebrities and official events, and may drive hospital vehicles.
  • Maintains high visibility as a deterrent to crime. Patrols assigned facility and grounds on foot. Verbally confronts unauthorized individuals on hospital grounds. Responds to all calls regarding security issues and incidents.
  • Takes control of all security incidents and potential incidents as needed to bring them to a safe and rapid conclusion. Directs and monitors vehicle traffic to maintain a safe environment. Maintains traffic control during emergencies to allow entry and egress for emergency vehicles.
  • Directs employees, patients, and visitors to appropriate areas of the hospital. Assists patients with special needs to enter or egress the facility as needed. Escorts employees, patients, and visitors to parking areas when requested. Directs patients and visitors to waiting areas to prevent blocking open areas and hallways.
  • Takes initiative to correct safety issues as discovered to prevent potential injury and communicates them to Security Manager.
  • Performs related general office and record-keeping tasks, including daily logs, incident reports, missing property, and other reports requested by the Security Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify you must have a High School Diploma or the equivalent. Current and valid NYS Security Guard License. Current and valid CPR and AED certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire date). Current and valid Crisis Prevention/Intervention (CPI) certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire date). Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.

NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk provides a salary range to comply with the New York State Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $31.11 hourly. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range listed does not include bonuses, incentives, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
