Position Overview
The
Senior Loan Accountant
plays a key role in managing the accounting and financial reporting for the company’s mortgage loan portfolio. This position ensures the accuracy of loan-level data, general ledger postings, and reconciliations while maintaining compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has a strong background in mortgage accounting, loan servicing, and secondary market transactions, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments such as Loan Servicing, Secondary Marketing, and Treasury. Key Responsibilities
Loan Accounting & General Ledger Record and reconcile all mortgage loan transactions including funding, sales, servicing transfers, payoffs, and investor remittances. Maintain accurate loan-level accounting in the general ledger and sub-ledger systems. Review and reconcile loan balances, escrows, advances, and investor accounts on a monthly basis. Ensure appropriate recognition of loan origination fees, premiums/discounts, and servicing assets or liabilities in accordance with GAAP. Financial Reporting & Analysis Assist with month-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis. Prepare loan portfolio reports, pipeline summaries, and gain/loss analyses for management and external auditors. Support preparation of financial statements and disclosures related to mortgage loans and servicing rights. Operational & Compliance Support Collaborate with Loan Operations, Secondary Marketing, and Servicing to resolve loan-level discrepancies. Ensure compliance with investor, regulatory, and company accounting policies. Assist with audit requests and examinations (internal, external, and regulatory). Participate in system enhancements, process improvements, and automation initiatives. Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or progress toward CPA preferred.
Experience:
4+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the
mortgage banking or financial services
industry.
Strong understanding of
loan accounting ,
servicing , and
secondary market transactions .
Experience with
Oracle Fusion
highly preferred or other large ERP systems.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in Excel and accounting systems; knowledge of GAAP and mortgage accounting principles.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
