Overview
The Washington State Attorney General's Office (AGO) invites qualified applicants for a Vancouver Section Chief role within the Regional Services Division (RSD). The Section Chief will oversee all legal work in Vancouver, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage building administrative tasks while supporting staff and advancing the AGO’s mission. The Regional Services Division comprises seven sections located in communities across Washington state. RSD staff live in the communities they serve and are part of the larger AGO, upholding the goal of being the best public law office in the U.S. About the RSD/Vancouver Section
The Vancouver office includes 19 attorneys and 17 legal support staff, handling litigation and client advice, including juvenile court, superior court, and administrative hearings. Clients and cases cover Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, Wahkiakum and Klickitat counties, and include agencies such as the Department of Children, Youth and Families; Department of Social and Health Services; Department of Labor and Industries; Department of Employment Security; Department of Licensing; and local colleges and schools. The position is located in downtown Vancouver, Washington. Vancouver offers a balanced mix of amenities and outdoor opportunities in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area. Role and Responsibilities
The RSD Vancouver Section Chief is a site manager who oversees all legal work in Vancouver, including coaching, mentoring, and staff support, along with related building management tasks. As a Section Chief, you will: Be a decision maker for the office/site and carry a juvenile litigation caseload as appropriate Represent the office in the local community and interact with court partners Mentor attorneys and provide guidance on complex cases Attend to office operations and staff communications, including changes to parking Manage essential duties such as hiring, evaluating performance, and ensuring deadlines are met Coordinate with the RSD Division Chief to maintain operations and inclusive culture Maintain a minimum in-office presence of 2 to 3 days per week, or as needed, in line with AGO telecommuting policy Essential management functions include: hiring employees; evaluating performance; providing sound legal judgment; tracking caseloads; ensuring critical deadlines; implementing performance plans; promoting diversity and inclusion; and maintaining an inclusive culture. In addition to management duties, the candidate must demonstrate: Legal competency and excellent organizational and time management skills Delegation skills and the ability to make difficult decisions Flexibility, open and frequent communication, and impeccable judgment Respect for diverse experiences and professional growth Current juvenile litigation experience *Note: Juvenile litigation experience involves handling cases related to the health and safety of children in matters of dependency, guardianship, and termination of parental rights, and familiarity with related laws and recent policy changes. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver with management and juvenile litigation experience, capable of leading and implementing change while managing a legal team. Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school or completed the WSBA Law Clerk Program and be licensed to practice in Washington. Applicants actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered. MAAG2 salary range is $90,444 to $169,392, with exact amount set per Appendix B of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
