Project Manager - Decommissioning & Demolition (Multiple Locations)
Burns & McDonnell’s Great Lakes Region is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Decommissioning and Demolition Project Manager to support and lead the technical execution of power plant and industrial facility decommissioning and demolition projects. This individual will provide the management and implementation of engineering services for utility and industrial clients for the decommissioning and demolition of retired facilities. This position reports directly to the Program Manager of Facility Decommissioning and Demolition Services in our Chicago office. Key responsibilities
include developing decommissioning and demolition plans and specifications, conducting regulated materials assessments, preparing remediation and closure plans for ash ponds and landfills, generating contractor bid documents, managing the bidding process, overseeing project implementation, ensuring quality assurance and control, and contributing to business development efforts. Lead project teams in developing plans and specifications for decommissioning and demolition of power plants and industrial facilities. Review and comment on abatement and demolition execution plans developed by contractors. Oversee implementation of abatement, demolition, and remediation activities including ash pond, coal pile, and landfill closures. Lead project teams generating decommissioning cost estimates for utilities to be used for future project planning. Participate in business development activities including client meetings and proposal preparation. Demonstrate problem-solving skills, creativity, and sound judgment. Serve as the primary client interface for project activities including data collection, site investigations, and status updates. Organize projects, develop staffing plans, and establish standards and guidelines. Develop, guide, and coordinate design workflows, processes, and procedures for interdisciplinary coordination and coordinating with other offices. Assign tasks and evaluate staff performance to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations. Monitor progress of projects to meet defined scope, stay within budgets, and maintain schedules. Other duties, as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline or Construction Management from an accredited institution. Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility to obtain one is preferred. Minimum of 7 years (10 years preferred) of progressive experience in planning and executing decommissioning and demolition projects for power plants or industrial facilities. 5 years of experience in demolition engineering or project management with a demolition contractor or engineering firm is preferred. Proven experience in managing tasks, contractors, and projects. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present complex information to diverse audiences. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera. Willingness to travel 20–60% as required.
