This vacancy is in the Police Department's Information Technology (PDIT) unit for the Infrastructure/Enterprise Operations Assignment, specifically Network Infrastructure. First review of applications will be Monday, September 15, 2025. Role Summary
The IT Engineer II in the Network Infrastructure assignment plans, assesses, and proactively monitors platform and environment to meet performance and availability metrics. They plan, coordinate, and ensure firmware and software configurations are in place, and monitor performance of specific areas under primary responsibility by proactively taking preemptive measures to minimize interruptions. They document actions performed to improve skill transfer/knowledge transfer to secondary in support. They perform complex diagnostics and troubleshooting in support of designated platforms. They excel at test scripts and QA processes resulting in increased percentage of successfully implemented changes. The role requires expert understanding of network protocols, security, routing, switching, and firewall technologies, and involves mentoring and sharing this expertise with others. Secondary IT disciplines to be supported within this assignment include Server OS and virtualization, enterprise storage, and enterprise backup. Responsibilities
Perform independent and complex diagnostics and troubleshooting in support of designated platforms. Develop and execute test scripts and QA processes to improve change success rates. Mentor and share expertise with team members in network technologies and related IT disciplines. Support multiple areas within the assignment, including Server OS/virtualization, storage, and backup. Engage in project leadership for small- to medium-scale projects using PMO-standard methodologies when applicable. Participate in team training and apply team principles in daily work with functional teams. Coordinate and document tasks to meet availability and performance goals across City applications or infrastructure. Assist with research, evaluation, and implementation of new technologies and/or packaged software. Install and support hardware and software; prepare and update system documentation; control changes in system environments for stable delivery. Plan, analyze, design, implement, coordinate, and schedule processes for systems that function across multiple platforms. Support computing processes executed across multiple platforms and/or networks; monitor, forecast, and report on performance metrics. Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate shall possess a Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification or equivalent experience. Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field (Engineering, Geography) by assignment. Considerable (3 - 5 years) computer systems experience in at least one of the following areas: Applications, Database, Desktop, GIS, Network, Security, Server, or Web Support. Role Details & Distinctions
This class provides skilled technical services for installation, configuration, testing, integration, and ongoing support for City applications or infrastructure, with emphasis on meeting availability and performance goals. Distinguished from IT Engineer III by not assuming the highest level of technical leadership for highly complex systems; may lead medium- to large-sized projects and provide technical guidance within assigned areas. Distinguished from IT Engineer I by independent performance of highly technical application or product support and potential leadership of medium- to large-sized projects. May participate in on-call support (24/7) and may function as a customer liaison, project leader, or technical advisor. Exempt status: FLSA exempt – computer professional. Part-time employees in this class are FLSA nonexempt. Special Requirements
For a conditional offer of employment, must pass a background investigation through the City of Mesa Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to employment (by assignment). Successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph may be required (by assignment). Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date (by assignment). Other Requirements
Substance abuse testing may be required due to safety and/or security-sensitive nature of the assignment. Preferred/Desirable Qualifications
Good (1 - 3 years) project or technical leadership experience is highly desirable and may be required (by assignment). Customer service and teamwork experience is highly desirable. Supervisory experience may be preferred (by assignment).
