SUMMARY: Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants) provide comprehensive care to patients with brain and spine disorders on the inpatient Neurosurgery floor (non-ICU) at a level one trauma center. Primary duties include assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients in preoperative and postoperative settings. The Advanced Practice Provider will respond to patient status changes, orders, and situations requiring procedural or resuscitative interventions. They collaborate with neurosurgical attendings and residents to evaluate and consult patients in the Emergency Room, and to formulate and implement neurosurgical treatment plans. The role includes perioperative care, preparing patients for the operating room, placing post-operative orders, and interpreting daily imaging and labs. There may be opportunities to perform simple bedside procedures such as removing surgical drains and sutures and programming shunts; additional training on placing central/arterial lines, lumbar drains, and external ventricular drains may be available. The provider is accountable for facilitating high-quality patient experiences within a cost-effective timeframe and reports to the Medical Director of Patient Services, overseeing a caseload across the care continuum (pre-admission to post-discharge when feasible). The role includes education, consultation, and liaison activities with healthcare providers across the continuum. Responsibilities

Manage a caseload of neurosurgical patients in partnership with the healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care across settings.

Provide leadership in development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of standards, policies, procedures, and critical care pathways.

Oversee care coordination in acute, home, and ambulatory settings where feasible.

Support the healthcare team in achieving healthcare goals through education and encouragement.

Demonstrate advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills and apply knowledge of family dynamics.

Provide direct care in acute, ambulatory, and home care settings; perform advanced practice tasks under Medical Director supervision.

Provide expert clinical consultation to promote knowledge and skills among care teams.

Participate in education, clinical research, and mentoring of healthcare providers; facilitate patient/family education in neurosurgical care.

Complete mandatory safety and infection control trainings (BLS, ACLS/PALS) annually.

Maintain prescriptive privileges per licensure.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited APP program and eligibility to practice as an APP in Rhode Island.

Current registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in Rhode Island.

Analytical ability and strong interpersonal skills to work with patients, families, staff, and providers.

Experience providing care across the lifespan with consideration of aging, development, and cultural factors.

Experience in a clinically intensive environment is preferred; new graduates with relevant education may be considered.

Work Environment General hospital environment with occasional high-stress conditions related to patient care. Supervisory responsibilities: None.

Compensation and Location Pay Range: $125,000.00 – $158,593.75
